Egypt, Ireland, Zambia: The latest Fifa world rankings are out

Martin O’Neill’s side are keeping good company.

IRELAND REMAIN 61ST in the latest Fifa world rankings, nestled between Egypt and Zambia.

Martin O’Neill’s side suffered their first competitive defeat against Scotland this month but bounced back to beat the USA and finish the year on a positive note.

The top six remain unchanged with world champions Germany first ahead of Argentina, Colombia, Belgium, the Netherlands and Brazil.

Scotland are up one place to 36th while Ireland’s other Euro 2016 rivals Poland and Georgia are in 40th and 126th respectively.

England climb seven places to 13th following their 100% start to qualification, Wales are unchanged at 34th, and Northern Ireland are down four to 47th on the back of their 2-0 defeat in Romania.

I wouldn’t worry, Steven. They don’t mean anything. Drawing against a team that’s number one and not improving proves high inaccuracy and proves it means squat.

Still a bit of a shame to be so low. We were in the top ten back in the nineties under charlton.

But they do mean something, don’t they determine our seeding for qualification groups? That’s the reason we got the group we did. So even though they make no sense, they do count. Typical Fifa shite

Nope, groups for European Championship qualification are determined by UEFA coefficient, not FIFA’s rankings.
UEFA’s coefficient was also used for European WC qualification groups up until I think 2006 at which point FIFA asked that they switch to FIFA’s rankings – to try add some sort of weight to the rankings.
So we’ve a bit of time to climb the rankings, but they have nothing to do with the Euros.

Giving out about rankings is so inane. It’s practically impossible to get such a complex list to everyone’s satisfaction. The fact is we don’t deserve to be in the top 50 in the world full stop. Our performances against both Germany and Scotland proved this. Anyone who says otherwise is delusional.

Daly you’re wrong, wrong, wrong! it’s previous quantifying campaigns that determine our seeding not the FIFA ranking

Maybe not, but they won their first three games of the campaign.

I love Ireland, go to all the games. But the fact of the matter is that we just dont win big games.
