Irish cricketers take over Lord's... for a few minutes anyway

ED JOYCE AND Paul Stirling took centre stage at Lord’s today to mark the two-month countdown to Ireland versus England.

The countries meet in a one-day international on 3 September in what is set to be the highest-ever attendance for a cricket match on these shores. The game, billed as the RSA Challenge, will also be the first ever played at Ireland’s new one-day venue in Malahide.

It will be a chance for England to avenge their famous defeat at the 2011 World Cup, but Stirling says Ireland will be out to write the next great chapter in the country’s cricketing story.

He said: “Games between Ireland and England in any sport have that extra edge, and that’s certainly the case when we play them on the cricket field.

“There’s no doubt they’re still hurting after we pulled off the greatest upset in World Cup history thanks to Kevin O’Brien’s record breaking hundred. The team has obviously great memories of that never to be forgotten night in Bangalore but we’re keen to create new ones now.

“We’ve come close to beating them twice in Ireland as well as that win in India. We lost by just a few runs in Belfast and Dublin, so we want to get a win on home soil.”

Tickets are on sale now through Ticketmaster.ie and CricketIreland.ie.
