Open thread: What Ireland side should start the 6 Nations?

Declan Kidney will have big decisions to make next February.

IRISH RUGBY SUPPORTERS have been truly energised on three occasions this year – Tommy Bowe v France, All Blacks pushed close in Christchurch, and 55 glorious minutes at the Aviva Stadium yesterday.

As Bowe crossed for his team’s seventh try against a stunned Argentina, the prospect of two 50-plus scores in the space of a week was a genuine possibility.

Ireland were warmly applauded off, by fans and magnanimous Argentinean players, at the final whistle and ranking worries were a world away.

The Six Nations awaits in 2013 as does a British & Irish Lions tour to Australia next summer or, as Brian O’Driscoll calls it, ‘the cherry’.

With O’Driscoll, Sean O’Brien, Rob Kearney, Rory Best and Paul O’Connell all in line for recalls next spring, many will be wondering what Ireland’s best team will be.

That is where we need your help.

Rather than asking for preferred players one to 15, we are asking you to give your opinion on the best combinations to take on Wales at the Millennium Stadium and gain revenge for Mike Phillips’ grand larceny in 2011.

Front row

Michael Bent seems to be a good signing by Leinster and should provide Mike Ross with provincial competition, and well-earned rest. David Kilcoyne was the back-up prop for Cian Healy and Sean Cronin did superbly against Fiji. The bone of selectorial tension here comes when Rory Best returns. Will he be able to shift Richardt Strauss as first-choice hooker? Best two options:

  • Healy-Strauss-Ross
  • Healy-Best-Ross

Second row

The loss of Paul O’Connell seemed insurmountable three weeks ago but Mike McCarthy’s man-of-the-match performance against South Africa offered solace. Iain Henderson featured in the three November games as back row cover but he is a talented lock. Dan Tuohy will be keen for another chance but Donncha O’Callaghan’s days look numbered. Donnacha Ryan has cemented his position.

  • Ryan-O’Connell
  • Ryan-McCarthy

Back row

This department suffered the biggest blows before the series began. Sean O’Brien, who returned to league action with Leinster on Friday, was ruled out well in advance but Stephen Ferris’ ankle injury meant his reluctant withdrawal.

Peter O’Mahony looked more at home at blindside flanker for Ireland, Jamie Heaslip was yellow carded against the Boks but performed well otherwise and Chris Henry evoked memories of David Wallace at seven. With Iain Henderson playing well for Ulster, six players are vying for three spots.

  • Ferris-O’Brien-Heaslip
  • O’Brien-Henry-Heaslip

Half backs

Despite the positive senior outing for Paddy Jackson against Fiji and Ronan O’Gara’s assertions that he will not be retiring any time soon, Jonathan Sexton is the undoubted choice at 10. Conor Murray’s higher tempo and smarter kicking against the Pumas keeps him in pole position as scrum-half but Eoin Reddan is a slick operator and Paul Marshall must not be ignored for much longer if he continues to excel at Ulster.

  • Murray-Sexton
  • Reddan-Sexton

Wingers

Bowe had a lock on the right wing position even before he crossed for two tries against Argentina. Craig Gilroy is the man in possession of the left wing position but the return of O’Driscoll may shunt Keith Earls out wide. Simon Zebo was another Irish positive this month and will be eager for a wing role if Rob Kearney returns to full fitness.

  • Gilroy-Bowe
  • Earls-Bowe

Centres

O’Driscoll was enjoying his umpteenth lease of life early in the season before injury ruled him out of another series of games. A Six Nations push – perhaps without the captaincy burden – is on the cards and Gordon D’Arcy will feel he has done enough to retain the 12 jersey.

Darren Cave will be bitterly disappointed not to get a sub’s role yesterday after a fine showing against Fiji while Luke Marshall can put real pressure on D’Arcy with a good run of Pro12 and Heineken Cup games. Should Declan Kidney stick with Earls at outside centre too?

  • D’Arcy-O’Driscoll.
  • Marshall-O’Driscoll

Fullback

As last season’s European Player of the Year, Kearney should slot straight back in at fullback. Simon Zebo has provided a viable option in the role and Felix Jones will only be better for

  • Kearney
  • Zebo

  • In relation to the squad as a whole I would start to phase out some older players to start prepping for RWC15 … I would drop ROG and Darcy and O’Connell (even though he’s a great player he’s starting to be like flannery where different injuries keep him out for so long he’s missed the last two 6N) and bring in Jackson Marshall and Henderson …. I think Trimble might struggle to find his way back into squad now …

I think from this 6N we have to find out who are centres are apart from BOD and darcy … We can’t approach the World Cup with our two starting centre both close to 34/35 but u need to give their replacement match experience … Would also like to see kilcoyne get match time ahead of Healy in Scotland and Italy games

  • Back to 22 man squads AFAIK, so it’ll be interesting to see who gets the bench prop spot. Court was shown up in Twickenham this year. Bent can play both sides, apparently. If that turns out to be true then we have to give it to him.

The most 50:50 call is at hooker. Two quality operators in Best and Strauss, and Cronin is fairly handy too.

I’m worried that POC may go the way of Flannery, as in he just can’t get a run of fitness together. Had hoped he’d make the next World Cup, but there’s a chance that this could be his last season.

Gilroy must start, and Irish Shane Williams in the making.

12 is another shirt that could go either way. D’arcy had a great couple of games, Marshall showed us what he has to offer against Fiji, and McFadden has been doing a job at 12 for Leinster for quite a while. McFadden would be my choice, but Marshall should be in that position by the next World Cup, however Kidney will go for D’arcy.

Healy, Best, Ross, Ryan, McCarthy, Ferris, O’Brien, Heaslip; Reddan, Sexton; Gilroy, D’arcy, O’Driscoll, Bowe, Kearney.

With a bench of: Strauss, Bent, O’Connell, Henry, Murray, Jackson, McFadden/Zebo/Earls/Kearney/Trimble/Cave

  • Given the home advantage for the tough games it should probably be one last hurra for the old boy; O’Connell, Darcy , O’Driscol, O Gara, O’Callaghan, Court, Reddan. If the are too old for their position by the time the world cup comes they have to go next year
Also we need to find two captains for the future as Heaslip is not the player he once was and doesn’t have the brain or leadership for it.
Need to cut younger players who don’t look like they have come far enough; trimble, mcfadden, fitzgerald. and let young gut in to step up to the plate gilroy, cave, marshall, zebo, kilcoyne.

  • The balance of the back row of o brien, heaslip and ferris is not right. while individually it may be better than having henry and o mahony there collectively there is a much better balance to Saturdays back row. A fact borne out by the domination of ruck and breakdown time and to a lesser extent against the boks too. This was paramount to the way we played as these 2 were able to scavenge while we could set a better attacking and defence line. Just look at the numbers that the ab’s can commit to the breakdown in comparison to teams playing against them. Because they have McCaw playing they can wreak havoc when he turns over ball. For this reason one of O Mahony or Henry have to start with the other 2 or else we will be back to where we were in last 6 nations. In this situation its who the team and the game plan benefits more by having in the team. It could be a no brainer as Ferris is no guarantee to be fit. For me its Heaslip Either O Mahony or henry with SOB or Ferris if all fit. Back row is the most vital line imo in rugby in terms, of stifling, gain line, ball carrying, turnover, tackle area clear out and upset the balance there now and wonder why in March why we not playing like we did Saturday.

    • O’Driscoll to play 12 Earls@13 makes sense fair enough you can’t leave drico off the pitch but he doesn’t have the pace anymore for outside centre this will take slog of the heat off earls who fair enough isn’t a replacement for drico (but then who is?). Heaslip is just not what he was in 09 no where near that form plus seems fairly lackadaisical at times.. By bringing in O’Mahony to the back row you give SOB more ball to do what he’s good at running at defenses… Strauss is just better than Best in his overall performance (the darts could be better) O’Connell is a brilliant player but with all these “injuries” that keep reoccurring can he really just walk back onto the team when McCarthy and Ryan put on two great displays? Trimble has been a great servant and was overlooked previously when on form but now may be abit over the hill and it will be a hard choice on the left wing with Zebo/Gilroy/McFadden. O’callaghan at this stage shouldn’t even be on the bench give youth a chance to get game time from the bench..

  • Right, so the props pick themselves!! The first contentious call is at hooker, where I would put Best back in purely because we need someone to Lead/captain the team, otherwise its a 50:50 call with Strauss. McCarthy and Ryan proved an exciting partnership with two good games, but if O’Connell can come back to some sort of fitness/form then he takes his place alongside Ryan.
The back row is tricky but I think Henry has proved his credentials at 7 where O’Brien and O’Mahony have failed before him. So he starts, with O’Brien switching to 8 where his ball carrying abilities will flourish and (subject to fitness) Ferris at 6. Perhaps a little harsh on Heaslip, but when was the last time he played well for Ireland??

Now, when you look at it objectively, it baffles me to see people put Murray in at 9. He is clearly too slow at the breakdown and his box kicking is lowsy – at best!! I don’t think he would get a look in at either Leinster or Ulster and Kidney needs to remove the Munster goggles with him ASAP!! Reddan is a far snappier player, which is what Ireland need to unleash an exciting crop of talented youngsters outside. Sexton picks Himself!!
At Centre, it would be prudent to switch O’Driscoll to 12 and put Bowe in at 13, where he played ample amounts of rugby for the Ospreys over the last 4 years. That allows for the enticing prospect of Zebo and Gilroy on the wings. Earls plays full-back!! Nah only joking Kearney will obviously return with Earls providing good cover on the bench!!

  • Kidney will have a have a few tough calls for the 6 nations. It will be very hard on Peter o Mahony if Ferris comes in for him But Ferris is world class and has to play.Zebo has been good but Kearney has co come back.Major problem that lies ahead is who id going to replace Brian O Driscoll when he retires.Keith Earls is not the answer and as a Munster fan i hate saying it but Earls shouldnt have been in the team for the SA and Arg games. His form is poor at the moment and Fergus Mcfaddan should have played.Hopefully O Driscoll should be back for the Wales game and hopefully if the great man retires from international rugby this summer,he can do it on a high with him been given the Captain of the Lions which no 1 can argue he deserves.Ireland team Vs Wales

  • Zebo has a lot of backers. Personally I haven’t seen anything extraordinary , his defensive positional play is poor and this huge boot I keep hearing about hasn’t impressed me either as he kicks at the wrong times or to the wrong places.

That said he runs hard and is a busy player. Kearney is still a a couple of levels ahead.

PS, KIDNEY SHOULD HAVE GOT THE BULLET 3 GAMES AGO. RECORD IS APPALING.

On the bench with each getting enough gametime each week should be Kilcoyne, Strauss, Bent, Iain Henderson, Earls(covering back 3 positions and center) , Murray, Paddy Jackson or Ian Madigan ROG has to go now in fairness been a great servant but mother time has passed him by now time to pass on the baton.

  • Lets drop O’Driscoll and Darcy for once and all. Darcy is useless, he kills the ball most of the time and has’nt made a telling break for years. O’Driscoll is injury prone and long gone past his best. Bring Earls into the centres and try out any of the other centres available. The key to our game against Argentina was the new players.

    Reply
    • Maurice are you having a laugh keith earls at centre!! he is simply useless at 13. For the second game in a row he has proved that he cannot pass at 13 (one of the most important skills in that position). His defence is questionable also. He is far more at home on the wing plenty of examples of him beating his man 1:1, world class finisher too. Agree that Darcy needs to go cant wait to see marshall at 12. You cannot simply drop the best outside centre the world has ever seen.

Kearney, Earls/Gilroy, BOD, Marshall, Bowe, Sexton, Murray/Marshall, Healy, Strauss, Ross, Henderson, Ferris, O’Mahony, O’Brien, Heaslip(Finally starting to show some form!!)

    • Do you watch rugby? get rid of the two best centres we have for earls and someone else?
Darcy useless? Someone better tell joel schmit because he seems to rate him.
If you saw the game darcy makes hard yards and returns very quick ball and very very strong defence. Have a look at the game again and count darcy’s tackles v earls tackles then have a look at the missed ones.
Count how many passes darcy made v earls
Count how many time darcy has the ball in his hands and Ireland keep it then do the same with Earls.
Count how many of our tries darcy contributed either by winning quick ball or making a telling pass. Then have a look at Earls.
Keith Earls is a winger the best winger we have in my opinion but he is not an international centre and certainly NOT the answer to who replaces O’Driscoll.

I firmly believe that we need to give the young players who proved themselves a chance in the 6 Nations. Some of the older players have to be let go sooner rather than later while at the same time holding onto a bit of leadership and experience.
For too long it has always been a case of “it’s harder to get off the team than to get on the team”.
