#IreARG: How Ireland’s match-winners rated today

A host of Irish players put in fantastic shifts at Lansdowne Road as Declan Kidney’s side won 46-24.

Simon Zebo – 8 Had an excellent game and provided much zeal to the Irish attack. Nice grubber kick almost set Earls up, kicked on for Bowe’s second and finished calmly for his first ever Irish try.

Tommy Bowe – 8 A superb showing from Bowe as he revelled in his role as aerial attack dog. Great catch started drive for Zebo’s try and his first try was all pace, wily body positioning and power.

Keith Earls – 6 Solid game for Earls but outshone by the back three, which is no shame. Brave tackling around the ankles, showed up on the wings for attacks and set up Ireland’s seventh try.

Gordon D’Arcy – 7 His trademark, dogged defence was in full effect and he helped out his forwards by forcing turnovers. Drew in the Puma defence well for Sexton’s first try.

Craig Gilroy – 9 A first half to dream of as the winger broke tackle after tackle, worried the Argentineans all afternoon and scored a magnificent, jinking try. Great aerial claims after the break to make up for one clearance kicked out on the full.

Jonathan Sexton – 9 On of his finest outings in green. 19 point haul including two tries. He set up Gilroy and Zebo for first-half tries and a smart chip almost gave the Ulsterman a second. Misses out on a perfect 10 for kicking out on the full at the start and missing conversions but still gets my man-of-the-match.

Conor Murray – 7 Much quicker service from Murray and he chose his box kicks with prudence. Encouraging to see him trusting his own creativity and chipping through for Bowe’s first try. Strong in the tackle on the fringes.

Cian Healy – 7 The Irish front row held sway for most of the afternoon to set up multiple attacking platforms. No major breaks in the loose but carried well and did well not to react after getting a ball from Bustos straight in his Movember-loving face.

Richardt Strauss – 8 After being hobbled for large tracts of the Springbok game, Strauss was excellent in the loose during the first 40 minutes and was rewarded with a try off the back of a rolling maul. One crooked lineout throw dwarfed by at least 10 accurate darts.

Mike Ross – 6 A steady game from Ross without ever mincing his opposite number. The Cork native will be pleased with his outing and the scrum that earned Sexton and 43rd minute penalty.

Donnacha Ryan – 9 A brawny day’s work by Ryan. He was heavily involved in the tries of Strauss and Sexton either side of half-time and did well to haul down Landarjo as he sprinted to the Irish tryline on 29 minutes.

Mike McCarthy – 6 Not as visible as he was against the Springboks but put his body on the line against a big Argentinean front eight and was on the receiving end of many a back-slap from his teammates. Eager in defence as Argentina pressed late in the first half.

Peter O’Mahony – 7 His best game yet for Ireland. Tackled in tandem with Ryan and won some fine turnover possession. Was whistled by referee Peyper twice during the match but was a true, physical presence in a successful back row.

Chris Henry – 8 Came in for praise from Declan Kidney after the match and, along with Ryan, was a key figure in securing go-forward ball for his team. In with a good shout to retain the jersey even if Sean O’Brien comes back into the side.

Jamie Heaslip – 7 Drove his teammates on all afternoon and did most of his best work on the turf as he recognised the damage the backline was doing. Directed the drive for Strauss’ try.

Replacements

Michael Bent 6 – Scrummed well upon his introduction for Ross but could not stop the Pumas’ late push for tries.

Donncha O’Callaghan – 6 Contributed to the lineout dominance when he came on.

Iain Henderson, Eoin Reddan, Ronan O’Gara, Fergus McFadden, Sean Cronin and Dave Kilcoyne – All arrived with between eight and five minutes to go but not on long enough to rate.

  • While Earls may of played ok, it’s clear that he has not developed as a outside centre, and will not top a 6 from playing there. Play to his strengths on the wing and try Bowe at 13. Best Irish game D’Arcy has for some time, not warranted a 6.

  • Thoroughly agree with sexton as man of the match! Superb performances all round though, can’t wait to see Gilroy playing again for Ireland!

  • Anyone see the eye gauge on O’Mahoney? Disgraceful.
Earls had a solid game but I do agree that hes not to be fully trusted in the centre and while I fully appreciate D’Arcy and he did Trojan work, it may be time to think of moving on. Especially considering that this was by far his best international game in a long long time.
It was a game to give us some hope for the 6 nations. Trying not to be cynical and think it’ll be typical Ireland of the last couple of years that come out to play the 6 nations. I’m not a fan of Deccie’s selections but he’s the manager so I won’t begrudge him the result and I really want us to have a cracking 6 nations whoever he picks.

  • Dose not take long for Leinster and Munster crap to start again. This is an Ireland thread. O gara is still a class player seems people want him to mess up. We need his cool head when sexton self-implodes sometimes !! Good performance from the team good to see gilroy and Zebo ( who I never rated) play well. Agree earls is better on the wing though I don’t think bowe would be any better centre to be honest . Great show by Ryan .

  • Typical comments from New Leinster fans who discovered rugby 5 years ago. Earle was not great but did a lot of work. Sexton was very good but the game, like most games, was won by the pack. Ryan was awesome, Heaslip had a good game for the first time since the lions tour. Overall excellent result, excellent performances all over the pitch.

  • Great team performance today, delighted for the coaching staff and the players who have been under a lot of pressure this week.
Wouldn’t have substituted Sexton, we learned nothing from introducing O’Gara and same for O’Callaghan, McCarthy would have benefitted from a full 80 mins .
These two guys are on the bench as cover in case we get serious injuries in key positions.
Darcy played his best match for a long time in a green shirt but its a shame we weren’t able to see Marshall get a run for 20mins in this game.
Great to see Gilroy grasping his opportunity with both hands

    • Were you watching the match? Sexton was holding his hip (old injury, lucky he started) from just after halftime. Would yoiu have preferred to let him ruin it altogether in a match that was well won? McCarthy got a huge hit in the face and was down for a while. Was very unsure on his feet but you’d prefer if he was battered a bit more.

Subs are there to be used and to save further injury for god sake. Some amount of fools on here.

Well done Ireland and fantastic result for everyone. Not one bad performance and can’t wait for the next one!

Disagree with the 6 rating for our midfield, Earls and D’Arcy were both strong today….D’Arcy has had his best two games for Ireland this month in quite sometime. As for the 8 for Zebo, I think he was average. Had some good influences, but overall, over-ran a few simple lines, a few silly knock-on’s, ridiculous celebration for a try put on a plate for him….he’s not at international standard yet and for sure not a full-back. We need to find someone else for cover at FB if Kearney is not back for 6N – Zebo has not been tested this month. Pity Cave wasn’t on the bench today, would love to have seen him at outside-center. As for giving Bent a 6, he won a penalty on first scrum again…bit harsh no!!???

    • @Conor and @Dave O’Brien – If D’Arcy did not concede that early penalty and it was O’Mahony, who was scrambling for it too, I will happily change my rating to a 7. I’ll keep an eye out for the replays. Bent starts off with an even ’5′ coming from the bench but did well to win that penalty. Leinster will be happy with their signing as Hagan was not too hot against Glasgow last night.

    • Patrick, D’Arcy deserved 7-8 at least. Giving him a 6 is just crazy and undermines your knowledge of the game..
Do have a look at the replay and note his class in giving a cracking pass to Sexton for his first try. That alone is worth an 8. His defence is also second to none…..
Be fair on the guy and jump off the bandwagon and give an honest and fair assessment of his performance on the day.

Agree Richard, OGara is useless, disastrous 22 drop out led to last Arg try, kicked ball away v SA in 82nd minute too….gobsh*te, such a waste of a cap when 1 of the other 3 would have benefitted from experience. Retire pls

    • That’s some ignorant comment , ” o’gara is useless”, a guy with 126 caps for his country .Yes, he is past his best but to be called useless by a no mark is a bit sickening !!!

    • That’s gratitude to the six nations top points scorer and a man who turned down millions to go to the states in order to play for Munster and be one of the most instrumental players in most Irish wins over the past decade.he’s nothing short of A legend of Irish rugby. (and I’m a Leinster man)

    • That is an absurd comment and you are just highlighting the ignorance of this new age Rugby supporter type who couldn’t tell you if the ball is pumped or stuffed!!

    • @Bilbo- with regards to the ‘turning down millions to go to the States’ O’Gara admitted in his book it was never a serious option and he just let the rumour develop to improve his position in contract negotiations with the IRFU. Obviously he was a great player in his heyday but putting him on the bench these days is such a waste, he offers minimal to negative impact and the experience would be great for someone like Paddy Jackson who should be there on merit anyway. And don’t get me started on Sexton to twelve.

  • Fue mucha la superioridad de Irlanda frente a Los Pumas , Los Argentinos nunca pudieron detener la fortaleza Irlandesa todo fue ALL GREEN !!!!!!!!!!!

  • Darcy was excellent today and there is no better inside centre in the country.
When Kearney and bod come back where will Zebo and earls play. If Bowe has one wing spot nailed and gilroy looks real good what does kidney do?
We done good today and it’s hard to find fault. I would ask why was sexton taken off today? Just to give rog another cap? There is no need for this sexton Is our 10 simple as that and rog should just get over it.
This emptying the bench is wrong, It cheapens the jersey when caps are handed out so easy. I’m not saying rog didn’t earn 99% of his caps but this business of giving 23 caps every time we play is wrong

    Reply
    • Well….there is the argument that a substituted player needs less time to recharge. You could also say that emptying the bench spreads the risk of injury around and minimises it also as fatigued bodies are removed from play….

  • Keith Earls’ little grubber kick ended up – purely by luck – producing Tommy’s second try. However, look at the kick for what it actually was: a greedy attempt to grab a try for himself. It was absolutely the wrong thing to do under the circumstances, when he had Zebo and Bowe outside him and a very thin Argentinian screen in front. The fact that it actually did produce a try was a total fluke and unfortunately will prevent any real criticism of Earls. The man is simply not a centre. Never was and never will be.

  • Harsh on Ross, D’arcy and McCarthy. Ross was on top in the scrum for most of his time in the scrum, and McCarthy was very good (IMO better than Ryan, who was not MOTM by a long shot). Earls is so laboured at 13, and D’arcy’s contributions made the centre partnership work at all.

O’Gara gets a minus 1. Useless. His time in a green shirt is over. Jackson, Madigan and Keatley are all better than him.

    • Earls played OK.. one bad pass from him, Ryan deserved MOTM, he truly stood up and marshalled the pack, as the saying goes, forwards win you the game, backs decide by how much.. and for ROG, first play he was involved in ended in a try, he was only on for 7 minutes! he did nothing wrong besides a cheeky 22 drop out.. Christ Almighty you are clueless
