AN INQUEST INTO the death of Wales football team manager Gary Speed has been told that his wife, Louise, found him hanged at their home on Sunday morning.

The proceedings in Warrington have been adjourned until January 30 with reports pending from the pathologist.

The coroner asked for the family’s privacy to be respected.

The former Leeds United, Newcastle and Everton midfielder was discovered in his Cheshire home last weekend. The news stunned the football world.

Tonight, travelling Leeds fans at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground will mark Speed’s passing with a unique tribute.

United supporters say they will chant their league-winning No 11′s name for 11 minutes, starting in the 11th minute.

The Premier League have also announced that there will be a minute’s applause at each top-flight English game this weekend.

Also today, Football Association of Wales chiefs indicated that they will not begin the search to find a replacement for the national side until the new year.

Officials plan to meet on Thursday but the process will not begin now until they meet again after Christmas, at the earliest.

Why can’t sport come to terms with depression?

  • Must have been truly awful for the wife to find him, what an image. Hope the children were not witness to that. May he rest in peace, he must have been tortured to do something like that.

  • Just goes to show that you really don’t know what’s going on inside a persons head no matter how happy & normal they appear to be…very sad.

  • I have read different opinions on Gary speed’s suicide in the last few days, people calling suicide a selfish act and so on. We need to understand that a person that committed suicide really saw no other way out of pain, otherwise they would not have went through with the act. Judging people that commit suicide is not helping at all, it is adding to the pain and guilt that people are carry around already. People should be encouraged to break this taboo, bring all the fears and pain out into the light and we can examine and work through this problem. Adding pain to the pain that is already present is not very intelligent.
