In numbers: The Open Championship

From zero through to 900,000, we take a look at the numbers which define The Open.

0 – The amount, in pounds sterling, received by the winner of the first three Open Championships. Instead of money, they were presented with the Champion’s Belt, a nice little red leather number with a silver buckle. Snazzy.

6 - The number of times that Harry Varden won between 1896 and 1914, making him the man with the most Open wins.

7 – Louis Oosthuizen’s winning margin at St Andrew’s last year. Lee Westwood finished second.

9 – The number of strokes under-par carded by Rory McIlroy’s in last year’s opening round, giving him a share of Paul Broadhurst’s record from 1990.

14 – The number of times the Open has been held at Royal St. George’s, Sandwich.

17 - Years and 181 days, the age of “Young” Tom Morris when he became the youngest-ever winner of the Open in 1868.

18 - The number of times the Open has been decided by a playoff. Stewart Cink’s victory over Tom Watson at Turnberry in 2009 was the last time this happened.

19 – Tiger’s score under-par to win the 2000 Open, both the tournament record and the record for all Majors.

46 - Years and 99 days, the age of “Old” Tom Morris, the oldest golfer to win the Open. Morris won in 1867, the year before his son, “Young Tom” became the youngest-ever winner.

50 – In feet, the estimated height of the famous bunker on Royal St George’s fourth hole.

70 – Par at Royal St George’s this year.

140 – The 2011 tournament is the 140th Open Championship.

156 - The number of players who will tee off on Thursday morning for this year’s tournament.

326 - John Henry Taylor’s winning total at Royal St George’s in 1894, a mere 38-over par.

2000 – To one, the odds available on 53-year-old Sandy Lyle to win this year’s Open. Lyle won on this course in 1985. He couldn’t do it again, could he?

7211 – The total yardage of this year’s Championship course, 105 yards longer than the last time the Open was played here in 2003.

900,000 - The winner’s share, in pounds, of the £5m prize fund. Not bad for a weekend’s work, eh?
