'I'd be happy for Ireland to drop points against the Faroes' - Brian Kerr

The former manager is siding with his old team for Friday’s World Cup qualifier.

BRIAN KERR SAYS he would like to see the Faroe Islands take points off Ireland in the upcoming World Cup qualifier.

Ireland host Georgia in a friendly at Lansdowne Road this afternoon (5.30pm kick-off) before facing the team lying bottom of Group C with zero points from their first four games.

Kerr, who spent two years as manager of the Faroe Islands after his spell in charge of the Irish senior team, has been critical of Giovanni Trapattoni’s reign in the past and, although he knows they need a win if they are to have any hope of qualifying for next’ year’s World Cup finals in Brazil, the Dubliner will be supporting his old side on Friday night.

Speaking during an interview on Today FM’s Savage Sunday this morning, Kerr said:

“Ireland need the points to help us get through. Look, you know, I’ll be honest about this: I will have a lot of time for the Faroes in the match.

If they got a result, if they get a draw – which is very unlikely – in the match, I’d be happy for them even if it damaged Irish prospects.

“I was close to the lads. They gave so much in terms of the effort and graft they gave”.

Understandable if he had a choice between honest footballers celebrating and John Delaney patting himself on the back.

John Delaney and co need top step up, the LOI has an image it just cant seem to shake. It should mimic the GAA and have one team per county, that encapsulates the whole county rater than a town/city.
Its crazy for a medium European size city like Dublin having 5 teams – 2 at most, the league will never prosper with these small Parochial clubs! Like limerick, derry & sligo – 1 team per county!
Build a few academies and nurture our young footballers like Belgium have done!
At least Brian cares about Irish domestic football compared to most of the Irish – i.e. the F.A.I.ures and the Irish public.

Delaney yes, trap yes, Robbie no. Have to applaud his desire to (fulfill his boyhood dream) play for his country. Always up for it fair play to him. If the next manager doesn’t want him grand, but the lad himself is there for us.

He certainly owes no allegiance to the FAI who screwed him badly. He was an excellent underage manager but wasn’t given enough support or time in the senior job.

He was a victim of politics, Delaney used his struggles, in a jammy group where everyone was drawing with each other, to help make himself chief executive spouting about getting us an (ahem) top class coach.

Pathetic ! How any true Irish person can say that is a mystery to me. Fair enough that he respects them but he’s Irish !! A ghoul of a one at that!!

He is a great manager. Did brilliantly with the Faroes and with Ireland underage. You clearly have not got a clue what you are talking about…

Remind me again, what “great work” did he do with the senior team exactly???

Oh yeah that’s right, finished 3rd and 4th in two qualifying campaigns, fantastic!

Revisionist history at it’s finest!… we were dreadful in qualifying under Kerr, what he achieved at underage and with the Faroes is totally irrelevant, managing a competitive, senior intnl team is a much tougher proposition altogether.

Does being 2-0 up against Israel in Dublin & throwing it away after his substitution of duff (injured) for Graham Kavanagh ring a bell???

Completely out of his depth at senior level & never forgive him for that day against Israel that cost us qualification

Thats great paul and well done to him for the underage achievements, shame he couldn’t cut it at the top level.
However it does not give him the right to talk bollix about how he hopes HIS national side drop vital points against the faroes. Is he harbouring discontent towards the fai because he couldn’t cut it at senior international football?
Who cares hes a turn coat muppet!!!
