THERE WAS A new face in the camp as Ireland returned to training in Malahide this morning.
Goalkeeper Ian Lawlor was surprised with his first senior call-up on Saturday โ the same day that he made his debut for Irelandโs U21s.
โBuzzing to have made my U21 debut tonight in Germany and to be told after the game [I've] been called up to the senior squad,โ he tweeted.
โDream come true.โ
The 19-year-old Dubliner, who is currently third choice at Premier League champions Manchester City, was in the Aviva Stadium for last nightโs defeat against Turkey but did not tog out for the bench.
This morning he was put through his paces by goalkeeping coach Seamus McDonagh alongside Irelandโs number one David Forde.
Third choice in city at 19 is a great achievement with the money they have!
Was about to say the same Evan.At that age like! Imagine if yer man got injured heโd be cityโs second choice keeper
Imagine if both first and second choice keepers got injured.
Apparently Pantilimon is on his way out of city so could be no 2 next year
Delighted for him seems a serious prospect, would love to see a few new young lads drafted in for the experience
He was behind Richard Wright in the pecking order but his contractโs up and Pantilimon is on the way out too so maybe he might become 2nd choice keeper next year.
If he can end up contributing half of what Given did, then get him in early
Why is Westwood being overlooked? Heโs not a bad keeper. 19 caps and all of a sudden heโs fallen back down the pecking order,
Basically heโs not getting the game time, and thereโs better options.
Also heโs been released by Sunderland, which says something.
Injured
Good to see the kid get a chance (coming from united fan). Would like to see him capped
