Damien Duff: bowing out. INPHO/Donall Farmer

'I respect his decision' -- Duffer isn't coming back, says Trap

The Italian said the Fulham winger will not be changing his mind on his retirement decision.

GIOVANNI TRAPATTONI MOVED to end talk of an international return for Damien Duff today, insisting that he respects the wingerโ€™s decision to call time on his career with Ireland.

Faced with a growing injury list ahead of the World Cup qualifiers against Germany and the Faroe Islands, Trapattoni dismissed reports that he hopes to coax the Dubliner out of retirement as a โ€œmisunderstanding.โ€

Duff won 100 international caps but retired earlier this summer following Irelandโ€™s disappointing campaign at the European Championships in Poland and Ukraine. Injuries to Glenn Whelan (hamstring) and James McClean (hip) look set to limit Trapattoniโ€™s options in midfield, but asked if he would consider recalling Duff under the circumstances, the Italian ruled out the move.

โ€œ[Myself and Marco Tardelli] only one time said to Damien, after he scored one goal, โ€˜you are rested, you can come back.โ€™

โ€œHe said โ€˜No thank you. Iโ€™m finished.โ€™

โ€œI never said to him again โ€˜Damien come backโ€™, because when he said to me, โ€˜No, Iโ€™m finishedโ€™, I respect that. I didnโ€™t insist that he came back. It must have been a misunderstanding. I respect his decision.โ€

@Stuart: Bulls have 4 in the top 5 of leading try scorer, fancy it to be a spicy one, few hot heads about too

@Thesaltyurchin: But two of those (Arendse & Moody) are out with injury. Still daunting though.

Heโ€™s dead right. Will have to do this the hard way. They brought it on themselves. Bring it on.

Itโ€™s a hard one to call. At home Iโ€™d be very confident but home field advantage is massive in rugby and the altitude is a huge benefit for the Bulls and an unknown quantity for most of these Leinster players. At least the temperature and humidity are not particularly high compared to other times.
