HUGH MYRES AND Jason Quigley can sign off on a brilliant year for Irish boxing when they fight for gold at the European U23 Championships in Russia later today.
Myres opens the finals session in Kaliningrad when he takes on Kariun Sogomonyan of Armenia in the 49kg division from 3pm Irish time.
The Ryston BC light-flyweight booked his place in the decider against Israel’s David Albrdian yesterday, winning all three rounds of the semi-final bout to earn a comfortable 16-8 decision on the judges’ cards.
Quigley, the European Youth Champion in 2009, comes up against Deniss Radovan of Germany after he survived a late scare in his middleweight semi yesterday.
The Donegal native led Russian southpaw Maksim Timofeev by five points heading into the final round, but was made to work for a 15-13 win when he was docked two points for holding in the third.
“We have at least two silver medals. Hopefully, we can make that two gold medals,” team manager John Finn told IABA.com.
“Hugh and Jason boxed very well today and their confidence will be high in Tuesday’s finals. It will be a big day for us.”
