NORWICH MIDFIELDER WES Hoolahan and Crystal Palace defender Damien Delaney have been named in the Ireland side to face Georgia on Sunday.
Shane Long captains an experimental team that also features Richard and Andy Keogh.
Irish manager Giovanni Trapattoni confirmed that the side would stick to their normal 4-4-2 formation, with Richard Dunne likely to play the last half hour of the match.
The game kicks off this Sunday at the Aviva Stadium at 5.30pm.
Ireland team to face Georgia: Westwood, McShane, R Keogh, Delaney, Wilson, A Keogh, Hoolahan, McCarthy, McClean, Cox, Long (c).
About time Trapp gave him a chance. He’s the only real class act in our squad. Having said that I think the Long Cox combination up front was very effective. Pun intended.
I’m guessing the idea is that Andy Keogh will track back and help out McCarthy in defence when Hoolahan goes forward, makes sense tactically, although obviously a 451 would suit Wes most.
Richard Keogh is an odd choice at centre back, but still nothing like as bad as O’Dea or St Ledger, neither of whom can even cut it at championship level.anymore.
Trap needs to drop those 2 clowns from the squad next time, pair of chancers both of them and have been for the last 4years, playing next to no games domestically and still getting picked every time over the likes of Pearce and Clark.
Frankly, if St Ledger is still one of our best options defensively, then we’ve absolutely no hope of qualification…
I agree he had promise, but that was 4 years ago, he has unfortunately failed miserably to deliver in club football every year since and we should now be looking elsewhere.
In my opinion, he was awful at the euros anyway and culpable for many of the goals we conceded.
He sits at Leicester as 5th choice centre back, picks up his massive Leicester wages every year for playing next to no football and yet Trap then decides to play him against the likes of Germany and Spain…
We’ll continue to get slaughtered by these top teams in competitive games until Trap picks a serious centre back who actually plays first team football.
What’s wrong with playing Hoolahan behind striker , because against the bigger teams you’ll not get away with 2 attack minded cms in hoolahan and McCarthy .
Wont happen Billie. Our manager has a crazy philosophy, he believes we are so bad that even attempting to retain possession would be crazy.
He believes that we are more defensively solid by playing 2 against 3 in the middle of the park instead of 3 v 3.
He believes that Robbie Keane is still good enough to start.
He believes that passing the ball along the ground is only for the likes of Spain and Germany.
He believes Andy Keogh has something to offer on the international stage.
He believes that we are stupid and arrogant for wanting more from our team.
He believes that Oswald was the lone shooter.
He also believes in life after love.
Why is West Ham’s Joey O’Brien constantly overlooked by this manager..A consistant PL starter who was Ireland’s best defender bar Coleman this season. .A far safer option than McShane anyway..
Hendricks instead of Cox & Hoolahan in the hole, other than that very excited to see how the fringe players perform especially the two centre backs as we are light in that department.
Don’t know what all the fuss is about McShane he has had a solid season with Hull and played a massive part of the defence that conceded the least goals in the championship this year

Puts the ball in the English net and now gets to captain his country. What a week for Shane Long. Hon Tipp!!!
About time Trapp gave him a chance. He’s the only real class act in our squad. Having said that I think the Long Cox combination up front was very effective. Pun intended.
Mc carthy is also quality
How does Andy Keogh keep getting picked…he is septic
True Colm. Defence is a big problem, as much as I don’t rate Keogh, hopefully he will do a reasonable job against the Georgia.

Really harsh on St Ledger IMO. He was one of the players who actually showed up in Poland. He’s been solid enough.
I know he made the error against England but with regular football he’d still be one of our best options.
O’Dea I’d agree with. It’s up to the new lads to wrestle that spot off him.
Frankly, if St Ledger is still one of our best options defensively, then we’ve absolutely no hope of qualification…
