MANCHESTER UNITED MANAGER Alex Ferguson has branded Liverpool striker Luis Suarez โladen with controversyโ ahead of their clash on Sunday.
The Uruguay international has been in superb form for Brendan Rodgersโ team this season, netting 15 league goals to leave himself one behind league leader Robin van Persie.
However, the 25-year-old striker was once again in the headlines after appearing to handle the ball to score in the Redsโ 2-1 FA Cup win over Mansfield Town last Saturday, and Ferguson feels the star may even enjoy the attention.
โI didnโt see the Mansfield game, so itโs difficult to say if it was deliberate (handball) or not,โ he told reporters. โBut I think (Suarez) is laden with controversy. I donโt know if he enjoys it or not.โ
Liverpool manager Rodgers has come out in support of his star forward, and claims he would not swap Suarez for Unitedโs lethal centre-forward van Persie. Ferguson suggested all managers will defend their own players in the face of such criticism โ but hopes his side do not suffer from yet another controversial incident involving Suarez on Sunday.
He continued: โYouโre always going to support your own player. Thatโs not surprising from Brendan Rodgers. Iโve done it myself. Itโs part of your loyalty and protection of the player. I just hope we donโt suffer from some of the decisions that went Suarezโs way on Sunday.โ
Suarez was banned for eight games by the FA after racially abusing Patrice Evra during a match between at Anfield in 2011, and caused further controversy for refusing to shake the left-backโs hand last season. Despite the recent tensions and the historical rivalry between the two clubs, Ferguson hopes the match will be an entertaining game where the players โ and not the officials โ decide the result.
โชโWeโve got the two most successful clubs in the country and you hope itโs a good game,โ he said. โOver the years theyโve been relatively free from controversy. No sensational decisions have marred the game. It is always an immensely important game. It is intense and emotional. Everything you can think of in a derby game will probably be there.โ
Fergie doing a wenger there. Of course he would have seen the โincidentโ.
The media needs to stop over reporting this Fergie nonsense before every game, not just every Liverpool game as it only serves to influence the officials every time.
Ferguson is such a tool bag.
Love him or hate him, you canโt deny he is box office!
Totally agree fergie is known for mind games when Utd play Liverpool โ didnโt think his comments were that outlandish โ heโs been doin it for years !!
Influence referees, what you crapping about, so 1 of the best ever managers in the history of football is not allowed an opinion on Suarez. His assessment of Suarez is fair and accurate, he does court controversy. How many incidents has he been involved in since his arrival to the premiership ?
Alexโs use of English has improved based on that comment! Laden. Controversy. Lol.
