ROB HEFFERNAN IS set to receive a bronze medal for his performance in the 2010 European Athletics Championships, after Russian athlete Stanislav Emelyanov was stripped of his gold medal as a result of irregularities in his biological passport.
Cork native Heffernan finished fourth in the men’s 20 kilometres walk at the time, but is now set to be promoted to third following the news regarding Emelyanov.
The star said on Twitter today that he has been told “unofficially” that he was set to receive a bronze medal.
The achievement, once it is confirmed, will add to what has been an impressive few years for Heffernan, with the 36-year-old Irish athlete having won gold in the World Championships in Moscow last summer, in addition to finishing fourth in the 50km walk at the London Olympics.
