SCOTTISH CLUB HEARTS have suspended Craig Thomson after the player was placed on the sex offenders’ list for inappropriate conduct with underage girls on the internet.
The player, who pleaded guilty to “lewd, libidinous and indecent behaviour,” was initially backed by his club amid widespread criticism of their decision.
However, following protests from their official supporters’ club, charity Children’s 1st and Scottish lawmakers, Hearts decided to suspend Thompson.
The club declined to give any further comments on the matter, but Anne Houston, chief executive of Children 1st, said that there was “no place in our society for public role models who have been convicted of sexual offences against children”.
She added:
“Professional sports organisations also have responsibilities in this area. Everyone at a football club who has contact with children and young people should be trained on child protection procedures.”
The police are not believed to be making any further investigation following newspaper allegations against the 20-year-old player, but Hearts are thought to be conducting an internal investigation into the matter.
