Happy Birthday, Chippy! Here’s why we still love Liam Brady

Unbelievable tekkers on the field and behind a desk at RTÉ.

WE HOPE BILLO and the lads are allowed to have cake on Ash Wednesday, because there’s a birthday in the house. Here’s why we love Liam Brady:

1. His left foot

Never forget that he was — to use the modern parlance — a top, top, top player.  (The Phoenix From The Flames is worth a watch too.)

2. ‘I’m already playing aboad’

One – probably apocryphal – story about the then Arsenal star, always stuck with me. The Gunners chairman sat the Irish midfielder down in the boardroom at Highbury and tried to convince Brady that a ‘move abroad’ wouldn’t be a good idea. ‘I’m already playing abroad,’ was apparently the reply. We choose to believe it.
