In pictures: Here are the 10 greatest* Irish captains

*In our opinion.

IN LIGHT OF Jamie Heaslip and Paul McGinley being confirmed as respective Ireland rugby and Ryder Cup captains, we had a mental whip-around and have come up with the 10 greatest Irish captains.

We hope that your favourite is in there, and we expect plenty of healthy debate in our comments section below.

Club and county captains are not eligible for this ultra-official top 10.

If you think  there are any glaring omissions, please let us know. Now, in no particular order:

His team talks are the stuff of legend but his most memorable moments as captain came during the Triple Crown winning season of 2006 and leading Ireland against France in the first rugby match at Croke Park (©INPHO/James Crombie)
  • Roy Keane

Roy Maurice Keane almost singlehandedly dragged Ireland to the World Cup of 2002 before going off at the deep-end in Saipan (©INPHO/Morgan Treacy).
  • Kieran McGeeney

Led Ireland triumphantly in the International Rules Series and was also an inspirational Armagh captain (©INPHO/Donall Farmer).
  • Karl Mullen

  • Trent Johnston

The all-rounder, born in Australia, captained Ireland to World Cup victory over Pakistan and guided them to the knock-out stages. (INPHO/Morgan Treacy).
  • Ciaran Fitzgerald

Fitzgerald captained Ireland to Triple Crowns in 1982 and '85, and the Five Nations in 1983. He was also a Lions captain in New Zealand. ©INPHO/Billy Stickland
  • Brian O'Driscoll

O'Driscoll led Ireland with distinction for almost a decade. His crowning glory was the Grand Slam of 2009 (©INPHO/Morgan Treacy).
