Grant working on borrowed time

Rumours of Avram Grant’s imminent departure from Upton Park began to gather pace this morning.

AVRAM GRANT’S MANAGERIAL tenure at West Ham United could be coming to an abrupt end very shortly if the murmurings of the rumour mill are to be believed.

This morning, Ben Smith of The Times tweeted the message: “Board meeting tomorrow, tonight could be Avram’s last game”.

That update was followed a few hours later with the claim that: “from what I am hearing Avram is almost certainly gone either way”.

This latest rumour comes as Grant prepares his West Ham team for tonight’s first-leg Carling Cup semi-final clash against Birmingham City.

It is not the Hammers’ impressive Carling Cup campaign which has left Grant in fear of the chop, however.  West Ham currently find themselves rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table having managed only four wins out of 22 games since October.

Now it appears that not even Saturday’s 2-0 FA Cup victory at home to Championship side Barnsley will be enough to preserve Grant’s reign.

Smith’s tweets also suggest that should Grant get the chop in the next 48 hours, former Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce could be in line to take over in the Upton Park hotseat.

Allardyce’s term at Ewood Park came to an abrupt end last month when the club’s colourful new owners, Indian-based The Venky’s Group, announced that he was not part of their long-term plans for the club’s future.
