GRAEME MCDOWELL IS currently in Kuala Lumpur, helping Europe to a cosy 7-3 lead over Asia in the EurAsia Cup. His comments about world number one Tiger Woods, however, have followed him from Bay Hill, Florida to the Malaysian capital.
McDowell, speaking to reporters last week, was generally positive about Woods and his recent return to form. The American is currently out of tournament play as he targets a recovery, from a back injury, in time for the US Masters in less than two weeks.
During his press briefing at Bay Hill, McDowell made the following comment about Woods: “He’s lost that sort of force field of invincibility around him.” The Portrush golfer went on to add that Woods is still the greatest player of all time, in his opinion. Nonetheless, sporting headlines focused on that lost force field.
Having won his second pairing on the trot, with Welshman Jamie Donaldson, McDowell found himself answering questions about the [physically] ailing Woods. He attempted to keep the focus on his matches in the new, Ryder Cup-style tournament but later took to Twitter to clarify his comments.
McDowell has been paired with the ever-dangerous Thongchai Jaidee for Saturday’s singles. Three wins and a half from the 10 match-ups will be enough for Team Europe.
