Got a new smartphone? Here are 10 sports apps you need to download

If you can’t wait to clog up your shiny new toy with app after app after app, here’s a helping hand.

SO YOU’VE BEEN a good child all year, right?

You made a list, left out some milk and/or cookies and, yes… Father Christmas left you a new iPhone or Android or something under the Christmas tree this morning?

Great stuff.

Now, let us take you through the best apps for the modern sports fan.

Got a new smartphone? Here are 10 sports apps you need to download
1 / 10
  • FourFourTwo Stats Zone (€2.99 for 2011/12 PL stats)

This is the holy grail of apps for football nerds. Powered by the good people at Opta, you can create your own real-time chalkboards to check out just how good Michael Carrick's pass completion stats are and wow your mates (or your "mates" on the internet). It's only available on iPhone for now, unfortunately.
  • ESPN Scorecenter (Free)

All the live score updates you might ever want or need in a neat little package with an ESPN ribbon on top. The customisable dashboard is a nice little feature.
  • Flick Kick Rugby (79c)

One for when you're bored in work or waiting on the bus. While away the hours by becoming the Ronan O'Gara of the smartphone world.
  • Football Manager Handheld 2011 (€4.99)

Everybody's favourite football management simulation? There's an app for that. Although if you really need to carry Football Manager around with you everywhere you go, we suggest you see a specialist.
  • Bike Doctor (€3.99)

An incredibly handy tool for anybody with a bike. These step-by-step illustrated guides will have that broken thingumybob fixed in no time at all.
  • Si.com (Free)

If you're into American sports, the Sports Illustrated app is a must. News, photos, videos, and a selection of cracking SI columnist.
  • Official GAA (Free)

When you just can't wait to find out who won the Longford Club Intermediate Football final, the official GAA app is your only man.
  • GolfShot (€23.99)

This is a very, very impressive tool designed for use on over 37,000 golf courses around the world. Use GPS to find the distance to the hole, track your shots and then analyse your stats over a soft drink on the 19th. Expensive, but worth it.
  • PrePlay (Free)

If you're the kind of NFL fan who thinks "I just knew that was going to be a 25-yard completion to Megatron", this is the game for you. As you sit watching Redzone on a Sunday night, earn points by predicting each play before it happens in real-time. Addictive.
  • TheScore.ie (Free)

What's the point in having a smartphone if you can't check your favourite sports site on the move? Download TheJournal app, swipe over to TheScore and enjoy.
