GORDON STRACHAN HAS been unveiled as the new Scotland manager during a press conference at Hampden Park this afternoon.
Strachan, who has coached Glasgow Celtic, Coventry and Middlesborough in the past, has been given a contract that will take him to the European Championships in 2016.
Speaking at the press conference, broadcast live by Sky Sports, Strachan said, “You’re always interested in a job like this but someone has to ask you.”
Strachan feels the European experience he picked up as Celtic boss will stand to him in his new role.
He said, “The time is right for someone like me to take a job like this.
“I like people, I like dealing with people and I like trying to make people better.”
The former Aberdeen, Leeds and Manchester United midfielder added, “All the experiences I’ve dealt with in management have prepared me for this.”
Making the fans proud
Scotland have not qualified for a major tournament since the World Cup in 1998.
Strachan declared, “I want to make the squad give something back to this country.
The fans are probably more famous than the team right now. He added:
The Irish have stepped in for us but hopefully the Scottish and Irish can get together at a major tournament.
It would make one hell of a party.”
Strachan did not reveal the name of his new assistant at the conference but told a reporter ‘you’ll know him’.
