Rebels rocked by Goold cruciate blow

Cork’s David Goold could miss most of the 2012 season with a cruciate ligament injury.

THE CURSE OF the cruciate has struck the Cork footballers again with the news that David Goold could miss most of 2012 with the devastating ligament injury.

A county spokesperson confirmed this morning that Goold has done “some damage” to his knee but told TheScore.ie that no timeline for recovery would be set until the injury has been fully assessed.

Goold broke into the Rebels’ senior setup last season, making his championship debut against Clare in the Munster SFC quarter-finals.

The Macroom forward is the third member of Conor Counihan’s squad to suffer cruciate damage in the last 10 months, along with team-mates Ciarán Sheehan and Colm O’Neill who watched most of last season from the sidelines.

It is a trend which has left the manager stumped, as Counihan told today’s Irish Examiner.

“It seems to be an ongoing thing for us with Ciarán’s one and Colm’s one and you wonder how many times it’s going to happen to us,” Counihan said. “You just have to say there’s a fair bit of misfortune.”
