THE MADEIRA OPEN was struck by tragedy this afternoon following the death of caddy Iain MacGregor. The 52-year-old, who was caddying for Alastair Forsyth suffered a cardiac arrest on the fairway on his grouping’s final hole of the day.”
A statement from The European Tour reads: “It is with great sadness and deep regret that we report the untimely passing of caddie Iain McGregor during play on the final day of the Madeira Islands Open.
Everyone at The European Tour extends our deepest sympathies to the friends and family of Iain at this time.
Following consultation with the players and caddies involved, however, it has been decided that play should continue and the tournament should finish. A minute’s silence has taken place at the clubhouse and play resumed at 6pm local time. All administration will be taken care of by The European Tour and we will help in any way possible.”
Spain’s Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano was one of many top golfers to pay tribute to MacGregor on Twitter:
The event was won by Daniel Brooks from England who edged out Scottish opponent Scott Henry in a playoff. The highest Irish finisher was David Higgins, who was tied 45th
RIP
So sad, and in no way should this tournament have carried on, disgrace is what it is.
