AFTER ANNOUNCING ON Friday that he was to leave Liverpool at the end of the season, Steven Gerrard today confirmed the worst kept secret in football when he told Liverpool’s in-house TV Channel he would join a Major League Soccer team.
The 34-year old has made nearly 700 appearances for the Anfield outfit after joining the club 26 years ago and, according to widespread reports, it is likely he will join up with former Liverpool team-mate Robbie Keane at LA Galaxy.
Keane, who recently led Galaxy to their third MLS title in four years, played alongside Gerrard during the 2008-2009 season but only made 19 appearances, scoring just five goals.
However, if Gerrard decides to follow Frank Lampard’s example and sign with an MLS team without actually playing for one, he won’t be short of offers with Southampton and even David Moyes’ Real Sociedad offering to take the former England captain on loan.
“He has had a great career for his club and for England and he will be very difficult to replace. If he ever wanted to come to play in Spain he knows he can phone me,” Moyes said.
