UTV IRELAND HAS announced the addition of Ger Gilroy to its sports team.

Newstalk sports editor Gilroy, who currently presents the station’s flagship sports show Off The Ball, will host a weekly round-up on Fridays at 10.30pm from tomorrow night alongside anchors and Marie Crowe, who joins from the Sunday Independent, and Bernard O’Toole — formerly of FM 104 and Setanta Sports.

Gilroy’s new role on Ireland Live at 10 won’t affect his radio commitments with OTB, however.

“UTV Ireland has assembled a great team and I am delighted to be working alongside Marie and Bernard – two excellent sports journalists,” he said in a statement released today.

The Ireland Live at 10 sports segment will equip sports fans with everything they need to know about the weekend of sport ahead and I am really looking forward to our first broadcast tomorrow evening.”

Mary Curtis, head of channel at UTV Ireland, added:

“From 10.30pm to 11pm every Friday, Ireland Live at 10 will focus on all the sporting action for the weekend ahead. Ger is a top-tier sports broadcaster with an encyclopaedic knowledge for sport – so, naturally we felt he would be a great fit for the programme.

“He is also hugely respected by sports professionals, by his peers in the media and by the fantastic following he has generated throughout his broadcasting career.

“With Marie and Bernard covering the latest from the world of sport throughout the week, Ger completes the UTV Ireland sports team and I am delighted to welcome him to the channel.”

O’Toole has an awful presenting style. Uses his hands way too much. Grand for radio but certainly not television.

WellOiled it is a shot to nothing for him, he is still primarily a radio host and will remain so if I am correct? So he has nothing to lose, and only money to gain presumably!? Good luck to him.

Not sure if it a good move for him or not , first impression are that its a rubbish alternative to the old UTV. If it was a brand new station altogether it might be a different story but the fact that it’s replaced another makes it worse

I think that Eoghan McDevitt would have been a far better choice. Ger Gilroy often can’t stop himself from allowing his personal political/social views to compromise his coverage of sport.
