GER CUNNINGHAM HAS been confirmed as the new Dublin senior hurling manager as he succeeds Anthony Daly.
The news has been confirmed this evening and sees Cunningham commit to a three-year term. His selectors will be announced at a later date. Dublin county chairman Andy Kettle issued his support for the new boss.
โThis is another chapter in Gerโs distinguished GAA life and I wish him every success in his new role. I am confident that Ger will build on the progress achieved by his predecessors over the next three years.โ
Cunningham had been the hot favourite for the position and returns to the inter-county senior hurling scene after being a selector with the Cork senior hurling team for the 2012 and 2013 seasons. He departed from that role in the wake of last Septemberโs All-Ireland final replay loss to Clare.
Cunninghamโs managerial CV also includes recent stints with his native Cork club St Finbarrโs and Waterfordโs Ballygunner, who he guided to the 2009 AIB Munster senior club hurling final.
UCC
In August it was confirmed that Cunningham will take charge of Fitzgibbon Cup side UCC for the coming year. Cunningham has enjoyed great success with the UCC Fresher hurling team in recent years and steered them to a series of All-Ireland wins.
During his playing career the St Finbarrโs club man won three All-Ireland senior hurling titles, four Allstar awards and seven Munster crowns.
Cunningham fills the vacancy created by the departure of Anthony Daly last month. Daly had been in charge of Dublin since November 2008 and was at the helm when Dublin won the 2011 National hurling league crown and the 2013 Leinster senior hurling title.
Best of luck to Ger & the new management team, by all accounts highly regarded as a coach in cork so happy enough with that. Panel needs a shake up.
Definitely. Thereโs a lot of mileage in that squad. The starting 15 has been essentially the same for the past 3 or 4 years. Not enough young lads came through in the last few years. Lost a lot of great young hurlers to the football panel.
Good luck to him. Hope we have as good a Leinster Championship next year, KK will of course be favourites, Galway will have a point to prove, Dublin under new management, and Wexford hopefully making the next step to challenge them. Laois are making progress too under cheddar, lets hope that the rest can up their game too!
Shaping up to be very competitive for sure john, youse are well placed to leapfrog us while we build again, should be fun though.
Roll on the Walsh Cup! Will be very interesting to see what changes he makes. Not expecting big things next year but looking forward to it.
A lot more in that group then they showed this year but need a couple of new players. Not much scope for experimenting in div1 with this formatt, might have to just accept relegation?
I think itโll be fiercely competitive between us all Shane! God, is it February yet?!!
Best of luck to Ger. Hope the cute Corkman might be able persuade some of dual under-age stars to throw their lot in with the hurlers.
Welcome Ger!!! Onwards and upwards for the small ball in Dublin.
Donal Og to be involvedโฆwouldnโt mind seen the odds on it as a coach or selector
More likely to be a St Finbarrs man that goes in there with him.
Wonder how much money they are throwing at him
Most original comment of the day right there. I bet your wife wears one of those โIโm with stupid ->โ t-shirts :)
He was at the Kilmacud Crokes u11 tournament last Sunday so must be planning on staying a lot longer than 3 years!!
Great Selection..Weโre ( Dublin ) lucky to have good pedigree Onwards and upwards.
Best of luck to Ger but feel it is a backward step for Dublin hurling, better out there we could/should have attracted for a side with talent and great recent pedigree.
Why wouldnโt Andy Kettle issue a comment of support for Ger didnโt he interview him or at the very least gave the go ahead to give him the job.A strange utterance.
What part of kettles statement do you think is unsupportive?
I think heโs saying that of course Kettle is going to issue a statement of support as heโs the one that interviewed him/gave him the job that heโs hardly going to not issue a statement of support? As for the โStrange utteranceโ comment Iโm thinking โpot, KETTLE, blackโ ;-)
Oh right, i miss understood โฆ Now Iโve no idea what the point was โฆ ;)
I could be wrong now and I thought the same as you when I 1st read it but then copped what he meant!
