Gazza: I don't want to be the next George Best

The 45-year-old says he’s doing all he can to stay sober.

PAUL GASCOIGNE SAYS that he will continue to work hard in order to avoid becoming the next George Best.

The 45-year-old was flown to the United States recently after breaking down at a charity event in Northampton.

‘Gazza’ admits that he almost died during the treatment, paid for by former cricketer Ronnie Irani and broadcaster Chris Evans, but that he is now more determined than ever to stay away from alcohol.

“I went to the treatment centre, and they tried to detox us, and they couldn’t, so they rushed us to hospital, and that’s where it got quite serious,” he told ITV’s ‘Daybreak’ show.

“I just remember the guy saying to the doctor in the treatment centre, ‘I don’t think this guy’s going to make it.’”

Comparisons with Best were brought up, with Gazza revealing that he was a friend of the Manchester United legend.

“God bless him, he’s passed away, and I was friends with George, but I just felt like George didn’t want to get well. I’m trying so hard to do it.

“I’m quite excited what the future holds – I had a bad time. I didn’t ask to be an alcoholic, but I must admit I worked on it.

“I went to any lengths to get my drink, I’ll go even further to stay sober.”

Gazza was a far superior footballer for starters and his women were much better looking.
