GARY KIRBY WON the manager battle against fellow Limerick playing legends Ciaran Carey and Mark Foley today.
The former playing greats were in opposition in the Munster intermediate hurling semi-final in Austin Stack Park in Tralee. Kirby was in charge of Limerick’s Bruff who defeated the Lixnaw team that Carey managed by 2-13 to 2-10.
Bruff were ahead by 1-5 to 0-7 at half-time but Lixnaw bounced back in the second-half with goals from James Flaherty and Mikey Conway. The Kerry champions brought on Paul Galvin and were ahead 2-9 to 1-10 entering the closing stages.
However Bruff finished strongly with Sean Finn bagging a goal. They ran out 2-13 to 2-10 winners to book their place in the final against Waterford’s Cappoquin who defeated Clare’s Feakle by 1-14 to 0-16 in today’s other semi-final.
Connacht
Galway’s Cappataggle crowned a memorable weekend with victory in today’s AIB Connacht intermediate club hurling final by 0-15 to 1-10 against Mayo’s Ballyhaunis in Athleague.
Mayo senior footballer Keith Higgins hit the net for Ballyhaunis but a Cappataggle team that included ex-Galway senior net minder James Skehill prevailed by two points.
Capptaggle’s win was all the more impressive as it was only yesterday that they had won the Galway intermediate final against Ahascragh-Fohenagh by 0-19 to 1-8 in a replay in Ballinasloe.
