Galway United play their relegation wild card... Michael D. Higgins

The President-elect and his wife will be among the crowd for the Airtricity League promotion/relegation play-off second leg on Friday.

GALWAY UNITED ARE hoping for a presidential miracle on Friday evening as they try to cling on to their place in the Airtricity League top division.

John Brennan’s men are on the verge of relegation following a 2-0 loss to Monaghan United in last night’s play-off first leg, but the club confirmed today that they will have the support of some very special guests for the return fixture.

Despite a hectic calendar of pre-inauguration engagements, President-elect Michael D. Higgins and his wife Sabina will dust off the maroon scarves and join the United faithful in Terryland Park on Friday.

Higgins, who will not officially become Ireland’s ninth president until 11 November, is also president of Galway United.

And while his attendance at Friday’s game will not be an official function, the club have announced their plans to turn the evening into a “Celebration for Michael D,” complete with a limited collector’s edition match programme.

“Galway United FC would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Club President, Michael D. Higgins on his much deserved victory in the Irish Presidential Election,” the club said in a statement today.

“The management committee, playing staff, squad and supporters wish Michael D., his wife Sabina and family the best of luck in this new chapter of their lives. As he always has — we know Michael D. will do us proud.”

It continued: “Friday will be a night for all Galwegians.”

A celebration open to not only football supporters but also the local GAA and rugby communities as well as the many cultural and voluntary organizations that have been aided by Michael D. over the years.
