Seven of the country’s top U21 hurlers are in the running for this season’s Breaking Through Player of the Year Award.

THREE OF GALWAY’S All-Ireland winning side lead the race to be crowned Breaking Through Player of the Year as the shortlist was announced this morning.

The Tribesmen’s captain Barry Daly, full-back Niall Donoghue and centre-forward Niall Burke are among the seven nominees for the award which is presented to the best player of the All-Ireland U21 Hurling Championship.

They are joined by the Limerick duo Declan Hannon and Shane Dowling, Cork dual-star Aidan Walsh and Dubliner Liam Rushe.

The award will be decided in the coming weeks by a five-man judging panel which includes two hurling icons, Galway’s Joe Canning and Waterford legend Ken McGrath, as well as Cork selector Ger Cunningham, RTÉ’s Marty Morrissey and Micheál O Domhnaill of TG4.

The winning player will receive a trophy and voucher worth €1000, provided by the U21 championship’s title sponsor Bord Gáis Energy.
