ON HIS FIRST appearance at the big dance Joe Canning was the coolest man in Croke Park, pointing a free deep into stoppage time as Galway and Kilkenny played out a frantic draw in the All-Ireland SHC final.
It was a moment of redemption for the Portumna ace who missed a straightforward free to level the match late on, leaving Kilkenny on the brink of sixth title in seven seasons after Henry Shefflin nudged them in front with a pointed penalty in the 68th minute.
After the minors of Dublin and Tipperary played out a thrilling draw in the curtain-raiser, the seniors matched that drama until referee Barry Kelly’s final whistle. It is the first time since 1959 that the hurling decider has finished in a draw; the replay takes place on 30 September, with the Ladies SFC final pushed back a week to 7 October as a result.

Among the afternoon’s many plot lines was the battle between two of the game’s modern greats: Shefflin, in search of his ninth winner’s medal, and Canning trying to bag his precious first. It was the man in maroon who owned Headquarters in the first half, scoring 1-6 including a brilliant solo goal to spark the final into life in the ninth minute.
As Kilkenny racked up the wides Canning and Galway pushed on and led by seven before Kilkenny narrowed the gap through a quick succession of Shefflin frees to trail by five at the break, 1-9 to 0-7.
The Cats grew in confidence as they set about eating into that margin in the second half and regained the lead when Shefflin fired over a long-range point in the 54th minute. Galway’s response was as emphatic as it was swift though, Niall Burke blasting his side’s second goal past David Herity less than 60 seconds later.
From that point, the game surged back and forth in a tense finale which neither side seemed willing to lose. James Skehill kept Galway’s dream of Liam alive with a stunning diving save from Colin Fennelly but the keeper nearly went from hero to villain at the death when his lunge on Eoin Larkin gave Shefflin a chance to seal the win with a penalty.
With two minutes on the clock the Ballyhale Shamrocks man took his point rather than risk a shot on goal.
Still it seemed that it might be enough when Canning missed his first free from 50 yards, but when Davy Glennon was fouled on the Hogan Stand side deep into stoppage time, Canning struck his final chance straight and true into the Hill 16 end to force the replay.
Galway scorers: Joe Canning 1-9 (0-8f), Niall Burke 1-2, Andy Smith, Niall Donoghue 0-1 each.
KILKENNY: David Herity; Paul Murphy, JJ Delaney, Jackie Tyrrell; Tommy Walsh, Brian Hogan, Kieran Joyce; Michael Fennelly, Richie Hogan; Henry Shefflin, TJ Reid, Eoin Larkin; Colin Fennelly, Richie Power, Aidan Fogarty (Emeralds).
GALWAY: James Skehill; David Collins, Kevin Hynes, Fergal Moore; Niall Donoghue, Tony Óg Regan, Johnny Coen; Iarla Tannian, Andy Smith; David Burke, Niall Burke, James Regan; Cyril Donnellan, Joe Canning, Damien Hayes.
Cody is a bully, he’s been doing it for years bullying officials. It’s well known he waits for refs at half time to berate them. He’s a hypocrite, some of his players would get done for assault based on some of the tackles today
Gerry just throwing something out there, Every manager does it from U12 to Senior level in the GAA. I can guarantee you in this years championship/League series alone, every single manager has probably followed a ref down the tunnel to complain about a decision (let’s be honest here, GAA refs are making decision sometimes when they are 30 or 40 yards away from the incident…. they make plenty of poor decisions) The problem we have with Cody is that Kilkenny have been in all the big games for the last decade so the sofa pundit has been watching mostly Kilkenny games and thus think Kilkenny are the only offenders.
Cody has consistently been an offender in this case. I have coached within the GAA for the last 15 years and know what it’s like dealing with refs. What Cody did entering the field of play when the free was given is, according to the rules of the game, an offence warranting a ban. Cody has often been the 16th man for KK over the years in his intimidation of refs- its not an issue that other managers/coaches are doing it but the effect it has upon high profile games when Cody does it
I’m drained, emotional, excited after attending this thriller!
Glad the replay is another three weeks away as I need time to recover!
Well done both teams.
However…….Gaillimh Abu !!
There’s something to be said for playing extra-time, 10 minutes each way for instance. More than an air of damp squib about todays result.
Kilkenny weren’t at the races in the first half. Shefflin was right to take the point with the penalty. He missed two scorables afterwards. Fair play to Canning for landing the equaliser, looked a dodgy free though, havent seen the replay yet.
Pros and Cons for extra time. It’d be great to see the game resolved on the day and I agree the game seemed somewhat anti-climactic at the end. The atmosphere and tension in the ground today was superb, as a neutral I thoroughly enjoyed it. However, the tradition of the GAA and the big occasion on the big day is a hard to resist. Tough call really
To be fair he did the right thing. Not long to go in the game, put kilkenny 1 point up. If he missed the penalty it would have given Galway the lift to win it.
A lot you seem to know about an organisation that voluntarily and with very limited means helps thousands of children around the country without an international audience or finance. The grassroots of the GAA benefit from every cent that the organisation makes
The GAA which has/is funding thousands of clubs around the country. The GAA which has played a huge part in developing Irish culture and identity!!! I can guarantee the GAA will pump every penny of surplus back into the game in some shape or form. The GAA has many problems but money grabbing/hoarding cash is not one.
gerry what about cooney on a quarter of a million euro a year not to mention they rest of the lackies , great game congrats to both teams and supporters
Cody should be banned from the sideline for his outbursts??? And you moron should be banned from playing or commenting on any game that doesn’t involve chalk and numbers!
He didn’t bottle it,tried for a goal from 21 yard free early in the game and I think he remembered that being saved. Shefflin played the percentages, took what looked like the winning point at the time. Good decision. If KK didn’t have him they’d have been well beaten today
sometimes the truth hurts!! was working there today and was dying of hunger when i got handed… you guessed it…. say what you want about culchies but at least they aint tight with the sambos!! great game of hurling great sets of supporters… replay should be a cracker!! gonna bring some mustard with me next time
I had predicted even score first half and kk to dominate the second half. In fairness kk are a team you need to be on top of by half time. It’s always been the same with them if you give them a taste of score in second half they will dominate and destroy. They showed great skill of champions to come back the way they did. As a Waterford man I was cheering for Galway but hats of on a great game by the cats
Looking forward to reply. Galway will need to be on top form. Kk can come back as we saw today I don’t think any other team including Galway can dig that deep when needed
There hasn’t been a draw in the hurling final since 1959, so what’s your point? More tension, excitement and hard hitting today than the last year of soccer put together.

Cracking game of hurling. Can’t wait for replay!
Cody’s outburst at Cunningham near the end was a disgrace. Should be banned from the sideline for the final.
Two of them involved in it my friend! Both seemed to be prowling the line all game complaining at every 50/50 call
Cody is a bully, he’s been doing it for years bullying officials. It’s well known he waits for refs at half time to berate them. He’s a hypocrite, some of his players would get done for assault based on some of the tackles today

What a game ,,, great day for the sport
One of the best finals of recent times and looking forward to the reply. Come on the Kats!
??? Why with a k ???
Kilkenny Kats
Cody’s head is now #ff0000 after that result. For non-developers that means 255,0,0. For non-graphic designers that means his head is beetroot red!
I completely understood what u meant, but that’s by far one of the most unnecessarily nerdy comments I’ve ever seen

Joe played well for Galway but the ref wasn’t far behind him
Ya twouldent have killed him to give Galway a free out after skehills save, but no funk it and keep the big boys happy, thanks Barry
Why would he give a free out? It wasn’t
anyone know if there has ever been a draw in both the minor and senior game on the same day before ?
12/1 on each of them, some double! No idea on stats though!
Should shefflin have went for a goal with the penalty, can’t understand why he didn’t
To be fair he did the right thing. Not long to go in the game, put kilkenny 1 point up. If he missed the penalty it would have given Galway the lift to win it.
Only one winner today – the money grabbing GAA !

Shefflin bottled it
with 68 on the clock taking the point was the correct decision.

Great game. Kilkenny were conscious of international audience in the 1st half. No intensity!
another big pay day for the GAAilban, who’d have thought?
Eh?…someone has tried this wind up already…
There hasn’t been a draw in the hurling final since 1959, so what’s your point? More tension, excitement and hard hitting today than the last year of soccer put together.
eh its football Brian :)
