GAA wrap: Wins for Wexford U21s, Clare intermediates and Down minor footballers

Here’s how the rest of the afternoon’s GAA action panned out.

Wexford 1-15 Westmeath 1-10

WEXFORD BOOKED THEIR place in the Leinster U21 Hurling Championship semi-finals with a five-point win against Westmeath.

An early goal from dual star Lee Chin gave JJ Doyle’s men an early boost but that aside, Westmeath matched them score for score across the game’s opening quarter.

The visitors clawed back that deficit and got a goal from a 21-yard free to go in with their noses in front at the break, 1-7 to 1-6.

There was similarly little to choose between the sides in the opening stages of the second half and with 15 minutes to play, the game was poised at 1-10 apiece.

But from there, Wexford showed their resilience and kept Westmeath pointless while Rhys Clarke, Ian Byrne and Jack Guiney tacked on scores at the other end that proved decisive.

Clare 2-21 Waterford 0-16

CLARE RAN OUT 11-point winners in the Munster IHC quarter-final which served as the curtain-raiser to the afternoon’s main event at Semple Stadium.

Aidan Lynch raised a green flag on 14 minutes, helping the Banner to a 1-8 to 0-8 lead at half-time.

Waterford couldn’t narrow the gap after the break and the balance of scores fell to Clare in the early part of the second half.  The result was already secure by the time Gary Guilfoyle added his side’s second in the game’s final stages.

Derry 0-14 Down 3-10

DOWN WILL MEET Tyrone in the Ulster semi-finals after they came away from Derry with a five-point win in this afternoon’s minor football clash.

Conor Doyle and Donal McKeever got the Mournemen off to a flying start with two early goals  and it was the visitors who led 2-5 to 0-5 at half-time.

Derry pulled themselves back to within three in the second half but any hope of a comeback was snuffed out when Pat Havern slotted Down’s third of the afternoon, seeing them safely through to the province’s final four.
