WEXFORD GAA CHIEFS have revealed that the official at the centre of the second incident of alleged racist abuse that is currently being investigated by the countyโs CCCC, has resigned his position within GAA in the Model County.
In the wake of the controversy that erupted when Lee Chin, who is in line to feature for Jason Ryanโs senior football side against Dublin in the Leinster semi-final next Sunday, was subjected to alleged racist abuse in a club game from two Duffry Rovers players, who were subsequently banned for eight weeks, it emerged that county junior footballer Eddie Lawlor was allegedly abused when playing for his club St Josephโs recently.
The incident involving Lawlor was not included in the refereeโs report but a letter was from the club which prompted the investigation. It is envisaged that the findings of the CCCCโs investigation will be issued within the next seven days.
Wexford chairman Diarmuid Devereux has insisted that clubs are responsible for the behaviour of their players and officials and that any further incidents would be dealt with most severely. He also apologised to the players and families of the victims of the recent racial abuse cases.
Childrenโs officer Dermot Howlin told a meeting of the Wexford county board last night, that part of the Code Of Best Practice programme, currently being rolled out to clubs across the county this year, includes a module on the GAAโs โGive Respect, Get Respectโ and urged Clubs to ensure all members take part in this course.
County board officers are also planning to promote the campaign to educate GAA members on the issue with proposals to make posters readily available to clubs around the county in the pipeline.
Disgusting
Is there some problem with releasing the name of the official who resigned?
In fairness the GAA are dealing with it as fast as they can. I presume people would prefer procedures to be followed and get the right outcome rather than rush to save face and get it wrong.
Some people would but some people would rather rush in & throw idiotic accusations at the GAA.
Hardly unusual from that bastion of multiculturalism, though I doubt it is much different in other sporting bodies. Maybe government and lottery funding should be withdrawn, this might go some way to changing minds.
3 points
1: GAA does not discrimnate on culture, politics, religion, race or sexual orientation.
2: GAA gets proportionally very little in Govt or Lottery funding compared to other sports or sporting bodies.
3: you should probably examine your own anti-GAA prejudices before you wade in with your inferences that the GAA is some sort of Irish KKK. The GAA is an accurate reflection of Irish society in general. Racial intolerance and abuse is not a GAA problem itโs societyโs priblem.
@Pierce 2020nnYou donโt get this in rugby at all.
The GAA does synchronise its fixtures in the country to make it difficult / impossible for some players to play association football or rugby.
Thatโs discrimination. The GAA is the sole source of continued sporting segregation in this country.
How Many members of the GAA are there?
Itโs seems to be an elusive floating figure and figures quoted by members seem very unlikely nigh impossible. What is the real number? Anyone?
Scan your newspaper or look at the comments here in the journal, count them, the numbers would suggest that the two Gaelic games are well down the pecking order of popularity and therefore gets far too much funding and attention.
Fitzenpatrik, the GAA organises itโs fixtures to suit itself, and why not, why pander to other codes which the GAA is in competition with. If thatโs discrimination youโve had a very sheltered life. As for number of members or popularity of GAA versus other codes, I donโt care, but my club has never been busier and even more so since the recession.
Thatโs a pretty ridiculous comment Pierce, the GAA is tackling this difficult situation quite well. More than can be said for UEFA & FIFA.
Hi John, at this stage the name of the official has not been publicly relased by the Wexford County Board.
Thanks Fintan!
Sesal?
He is still in hiding after the roasting he got last weekend. Canโt say I miss him to be honest
He is away at euro 2012 he has got a tattoo of ronaldo on his left buttock.
Offending players should be reported to the Gardai, i think we have existing legislation to deal with racial abuse.
wouldnโt get that with the football(sorry soccer)fans
Is there a hint of irony in that statement?n Pot kettle Luis suarez?
The GAA is a national treasure. It may well be corrupt (if thatโs even possible) but it does not discriminate. nnI donโt know many other countries where a national amateur organisation has such a strong following and also, owns, and is willing to lend the biggest stadium in the country to other sports.
It is a disgrace but should not be a reason to bash the Gaa. As an organisation they at least appear to be trying to doing something about. n
The main thing to remember from last weeks statement from the Wexford county board is that young chin is โWexford born and bredโ . Classic gaa idiocy. So are they saying it would be okay if he wasnโt.
ha touche sir
