THE REFEREE NEEDS glasses? Not any more — because the GAA’s new points detection technology will be sponsored by Specsavers.
The optician was confirmed today as the official sponsor of Hawkeye which is set to make its debut in Croke Park later this summer.
The system, which is widely used in both cricket and tennis, has been trialled over the last two years and will be introduced in Gaelic games for the first time in the Leinster SFC double-header on 1 June.
The provincial quarter-finals between Dublin and Westmeath/Carlow, and Offaly and Kildare, will be the first fixtures to use the technology.
Tom, the Harris Hawk, joined GAA President Liam O’Neill and Tyrone footballer Joe McMahon for today’s sponsorship launch in Headquarters.
