From Russia with love: Moscow men join Limerick FC on trial

Czech midfielder Lubos Kalouda and Polish striker Dawid Janczyk have joined Limerick FC on trial from CSKA Moscow.

LIMERICK FC HAVE turned to Russia in a bid to strengthen their promotion chances ahead of the coming Airtricity League season.

Czech midfielder Lubos Kalouda and Polish striker Dawid Janczyk have joined the First Division outfit on trial from CSKA Moscow and are expected to play some part in tonight’s pre-season friendly against Sligo Rovers in Terryland Park.

The players, who spent last season on loan with PFC Oleksandriya in the Ukranian First Division, arrived in Shannon Airport last night where they were welcomed by club chairman Pat O’Sullivan.

Kalouda, 24, was highly-rated as a youngster and helped the Czech Republic to a runner-up spot at the U20 World Cup in 2007.

He was linked with moves to both Newcastle and Chelsea before signing for CSKA from FC Brno in the summer of 2008, but failed to break into the first team as the club rapidly chopped and changed between managers, including Brazil legend Zico and former Spurs boss Juande Ramos.

Janczyk, 24, moved to CSKA from Legia Warsaw in 2007. Although he made a handful of appearances during his first two seasons at the club, he has since spent time on loan with Lokeren and Germinal in Belgium, as well as Korona Kielce in the Polish top flight.

Janczyk was included in coach Leo Beenhacker’s Poland squad ahead of Euro 2008, but failed to make the final panel for the tournament. He won the first of five senior caps in a friendly against Serbia later that year, and was also given opportunities during Poland’s World Cup 2010 qualification campaign under Beenhacker’s interim replacement, Stefan Majewski.

Both players are expected to feature against Sligo tonight and train with Limerick on Wednesday, the club said yesterday.
