Fraizer Campbell was racially abused for 'supporting' Estonia last Friday

Police have opened an investigation after the Sunderland striker was sent a racist message on Twitter.

NORTHUMBRIA POLICE HAVE confirmed that they are investigating a racist tweet sent to Frazier Campbell on Friday evening, the Daily Mirror reports.

The Sunderland striker was stunned to find that he had been called a “big f**king n***er” after tweeting his support for Estonia as the first leg of their Euro 2012 play-off against Ireland was kicking off.

The message provoked a few angry reactions from his followers though, forcing Campbell to explain that he was only joking and then prophetically predict a 4-0 Ireland win in a tweet to clubmate David Meyler.

It was only the next morning that he spotted and retweeted the abusive message, sent from @TheReid1. The account in question has since been deleted.

Police inquiries into the matter are ongoing.
