RED BULL DRIVER Mark Webber refused to get carried away after taking pole for the Korean Grand Prix on Sunday.
The Australian was the fastest in Saturday’s qualifying session, completing one of his 17 laps in a session-best 1 minute 37.242 seconds.
Webber – who inherited pole from Mercedes driver Michael Schumacher at the Monaco Grand Prix in May – has since been searching for his second qualifying win.
And at the ninth attempt it eventually came for him in Yeongam.
Although Webber spoke glowingly about his car’s improvements, he knows the main job is still ahead of him.
“This is my first (pole) on track (after claiming the position from Schumacher),” Webber said.
“I’m happy to get the job done reasonably well. We did it when it counted and that’s what it’s all about. I’m happy to start on pole, but tomorrow is the main day.
“Off the back of Suzuka (last week’s Japanese Grand Prix) we feel we had improved the car, but you never get ahead of yourself. We came here knowing it’s not going to be a given, we’ve got a good car here for sure.”
With five races remaining, Webber’s team-mate, Sebastian Vettel, has all the momentum.
Vettel has won the last two events in Singapore and Japan and will start on the front row of the grid alongside Webber after finishing second in qualifying.
And that was a performance that pleased the German as he bids for a hat-trick of wins.
“I think we can be happy with the result,” Vettel said.
“We were quite quick in the first part of qualifying, we were quite quick in the second. I think second is a good position to start with. There’s a long straight after the start so it could be interesting tomorrow.”
McLaren’s English driver, Lewis Hamilton, admitted it would be tough to defeat the Red Bull pair.
Hamilton, who qualified third, is fourth in the drivers’ championship standings.
“It’s going to be very tough to get ahead of them (Webber, Vettel),” Hamilton said.
“These guys have clearly made a very big step. We’ve got to keep pushing, we’re not far off.. I’m happy that I got a clear lap and was able to put the car as high as possible.”
