Former Ireland cricket star Jesse Ryder discharged from hospital after attack

Ryder was attacked outside a Christchurch bar and spent over two days in a medically-induced coma in intensive care.

CRICKETER JESSE RYDER has been discharged from hospital less than a week after being brutally assaulted in Christchurch.

Ryder’s manager Aaron Klee revealed the New Zealand-born 28-year-old former all-rounder for Ireland had been thrilled to return home but declined to offer any predictions on whether he will play cricket again.

Last Thursday, Ryder was attacked outside a Christchurch bar and spent over two days in a medically induced coma in intensive care.

While Ryder’s extensive injuries, including a fractured skull, have yet to fully heal, Klee claimed the cricketer was in good spirits when he travelled to Wellington on Wednesday.

“Jesse’s returned home to Wellington this evening, the hospital released him this afternoon, he’s improved to a stage where he’s been discharged,” Klee told ONE News. “He couldn’t wait to get home.

“He’s relaxed but he’s very tired and he’s going to be very tired for a while, not a lot of energy.”

Two men charged with Ryder’s assault will appear in Christchurch District Court on Thursday. After 18 Tests and 39 one-day international appearances for New Zealand, Ryder has been away from international cricket since last year due to a series of alcohol-related problems.

Ryder has had to shelve plans to participate in the Indian Premier League, where he would playing for the Delhi Daredevils, and Klee has conceded his client’s cricketing future is far from top priority at the moment.

“It’s a bit of a wait and see, how first he recovers from his injuries and then regains everyday fitness and just see how things progress from there but rest is required at the moment,” Klee said.
