Follow Friday: It’s Eliota Fuimaono-Sapolu

With an ostensible penchant for controversy and an obvious intelligence to boot, the Samoan centre is rugby’s answer to Eamon Dunphy.

ELIOTA FUIMAONO-SAPOLU gained notoriety at last year’s Rugby World Cup for a series of controversial tweets.

He even unwisely accused referee Nigel Owens of racism, among other thoughts of his that left rugby’s authorities less than pleased.

And given that he was eventually suspended as a result of his behaviour, you might presume he’d air on the side of caution with all future tweets.

However, much to his fans’ delight, the Samoan centre’s recent thoughts have continued to be as acerbic as ever.

Moreover, he is far from a one-trick pony. In addition to speaking his mind in a forthright manner, his tweets are often quite witty and self-deprecating, and touch on a range of subjects other than rugby, as the slideshow below attests.

So give @fuimaono-sapolu a follow now, before the IRB find some way to silence him for good.

  • Eliota Fuimaono-Sapolu

A provocative but not unreasonable tweet.

He also provides an array of interesting thoughts on the sport itself.

His tweets tend to extend to subjects other than rugby.
  • Eliota Fuimaono-Sapolu

His interaction with other well-known athletes is refreshingly hostile.
  • Eliota Fuimaono-Sapolu

Unlike some famous stars, he tends to respond to or even retweet people irrespective of their level of fame - at least, so long as you make a vaguely radical-sounding statement.
  • Eliota Fuimaono-Sapolu

Perhaps not surprisingly, the media are one of his recurring targets.
  • Eliota Fuimaono-Sapolu

His seemingly pathological compulsion to pontificate might lead you to believe that Sapolu is impossibly vain. He is far from incapable of laughing at himself, however.
  • Eliota Fuimaono-Sapolu

When he's not discussing sport, he's often busy deconstructing old clichés
  • Eliota Fuimaono-Sapolu

    As I said... self-deprecating.
