Five Steps to Heaven: because we're back in the black after our Grand National winner

There’s lots of sport to look forward to this weekend, but that doesn’t mean we’ll be making any money.

IT’S FRIDAY, WHICH means that it must be time for us to fritter away some hard-earned cash on a five-timer that has absolutely no chance of coming up.

Here are this week’s picks – just in case you’re heading to the bookies after work and want to know which bets to avoid.

1. Strangely enough, the Airtricity League is the one area where we’ve actually had a higher than average success rate over the past few weeks.

While reading Alan Smith’s column this morning, we noticed that Derry City haven’t lost a game since the first week of the season, picking up 15 points out of the last 21 on offer.

Stephen Kenny’s men face Bohemians in Dalymount tonight which will be a toughie for them. At 15/8 though, they’re worth a punt.

2. 21-year-old Judd Trump has been making quite a few of the headlines at the World Snooker Championships in Sheffield over the last two weeks.

The youngster was making steady progress in his semi-final against Ding Junhui but he hit a bit of a bump earlier today and now finds himself 9-7 behind.

With both players needing 17 frames to win, there’s still a lot of snooker to be played so we’ll back JT (not that one) at 9/4 to make the final.

3. Seeing as we’ll be providing minute-by-minute coverage of Leinster’s Heineken Cup semi-final against Toulouse tomorrow afternoon, it would be foolish not to have some sort of monetary interest in proceedings.

The bookies have decided that Leinster should win comfortably enough and, while we’re hopeful, we’re not quite that confident. Leinster should win by a very narrow margin so we’ll be backing Toulouse (+6) at 10/11.

4. Forget about the Dublin hype machine for a minute and answer me this – does anybody really believe that the Dubs can beat Kilkenny in the Division One hurling final on Sunday?

If (like me) you do, you’ve obviously being living in the capital for too long. The “sensible” money this weekend is on Kilkenny (-3)  at 10/11.

5. Luke Donald has been in a decent bit of form of late – fourth at the Masters, beaten in a playoff last weekend, and now off to a flyer at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans.

Lukey for the win at 7/2? Sure why not.
