Shelbourne extend First Division lead with dramatic winner in Galway

Meanwhile, Finn Harps and Wexford Youths played out a draw in a second v third clash.

A DYLAN CONNOLLY goal three minutes into injury time gave Shelbourne a dramatic win against Galway FC in the Airtricity First Division this evening.

Shels’ fourth win in six games means they move four points clear at the top of the table, after second-placed Wexford Youths were held to a 1-1 draw in their encounter with Finn Harps.

With 1,070 supporters watching on at Eamonn Deacy Park, John McDonnell’s Shelbourne side were determined in finding their winner, particularly as Lee Murtagh had a 90th-minute header saved by Galway ‘keeper Conor Gleeson.

However, Shelbourne continued to chase a late goal and their efforts paid dividends when Connolly stole the three points at the death. Defeat for Galway leaves them fifth on the league table, although a win for Waterford away to Cobh Ramblers tomorrow [KO 7.45pm] would see them leapfrog Galway.

There was a dramatic goal in the other First Division game of the evening too, as Ruairi Keating’s 85th-minute penalty salvaged a point for Finn Harps against Wexford Youths.

The Youths had taken the lead 20 minutes previously, when Killian Cantwell struck for what could have been a vital winning goal. It was not be be, however, meaning Finn Harps remain third in the league, while the Wexford side stay second.
