Ireland's Fiona Doyle reaches 50m Breaststroke final at Euros

There was disappointment, however, for fellow Irish swimmer Sycerika McMahon.

IRELAND’S FIONA DOYLE secured her place in the 50m Breaststroke final at the European Swimming Championships in Berlin today.

Doyle, who is the current Irish record holder in the event, finished fourth overall in her race after taking 30.93 seconds to finish, thereby comfortably beating her time in the heats of 31.63 seconds.

Speaking after the event, she said: “It’s a turning point, I’m still a bit disappointed with the time, I’m more than capable of more, but to have the opportunity to have a final swim and to prove that I can turn things around and show the work that I have done, it’s a really nice feeling. The final is wide open and hopefully this confidence booster can help me through and who knows what can happen tomorrow.”

There was disappointment though for Sycerika McMahon, who did not progress to the final of her event.

Despite swimming a personal best of 31.02 in the morning heats, she was unable to replicate that performance in this evening’s semi-final, ultimately coming 11th with a time of 31.50.

McMahon will be in action again in the 400m Freestyle heats tomorrow, while Doyle features in the 50m Breaststroke final at approximately 3.09pm Irish time.
