Follow Friday: It's James 'don't call me John' McClean

Every Friday we’ll point you in the right direction for some of the most interesting sports people on the Twitter.

HASHTAG BIG GAME the mara.

As a regular Friday trend, it hasn’t quite caught fire yet, but it surely will if James McClean keeps going the way he’s going.

“Big game the ‘mara” is the rallying call of the Republic of Ireland’s newest call-up.

Aside from that, though, you won’t see McClean making profound proclamations or telling you what he’s had for breakfast. So if it is an antidote to the wall-to-wall intensely opinionated comments from the likes of Joey Barton you are after: @JmcC_23 is just the man to follow.

Scrolling back through his tweets doesn’t read like a manifesto, it’s more like eavesdropping on his friendship with fellow Irish footballers, David Meyler and Shane Duffy.

What comes across most in McClean’s stream is the unbridled pride he will take when he eventually pulls on the jersey for his country.

He was a great knack too of forcing his accent into 140 characters too. Of course sometimes that makes him as difficult to understand as… a thick Derry accent.

So get following the best darned candy-striped winger we have. Lets get #Biggamethemara trending this Tuesday. When Trap sees his timeline clogged he’ll have to give McClean a cap against the Czech republic and then bring him along to Poznan.

Yippee-ki-yay!

  • He's so dedicated...

...he even wanted to play in the Carling Nations Cup
  • Seven months must feel like a lifetime.

The winger has come an awful long way in no time at all.
  • Nailing colours to the mast.

  • Could McClean have played for the North?

McClean highlights an incredible oversight from Nigel Worthington. Could he have been persuaded?
  • Little did he know...

Is there a man woman or child in Ireland who doesn't want McClean on the plane to Poland? Possibly the Hunt brothers.
  • Thanks for clearing that up

"Come out to the coast, we'll have a few laughs, get together.."
  • Such a heinous crime.

Can't Meyler perform the soft and subtle differences in tone?
  • Each to their own, I guess.

They are both wingers and wear number 23, but I can't see many other similarities with the LA galaxy playmaker.
  • Yes, there's nothing quite like kicking back and watching some mad-cap Will Ferrell comedy.
