Ferrari boss di Montezemolo hits back at 'elderly' Ecclestone

The handbags are flying in Formula 1 circles.

FERRARI PRESIDENT LUCA DI MONTEZEMOLO has angrily responded to Bernie Ecclestone’s appraisal of the Brazilian Grand Prix, branding the sport’s commercial rights owner ‘elderly.’

The 82-year-old belittled Ferrari’s calls for an investigation into Sebastian Vettel’s conduct, during the race in which he was crowned world champion, as ‘a joke.’

Ferrari had claimed that the German’s overtaking manoeuvre against Jean-Eric Vergne was questionable, though they later abided by the FIA’s ruling that the action was, in fact, legal.

Di Montezemolo, 65, said: “We must respect the elderly, especially when they can no longer control their words.

“Seniority is often incompatible with certain roles and responsibilities.”

Di Montezemolo insisted that Ferrari would accept the decision of the FIA at the time, and they did, despite the fact that their driver Fernando Alonso stood to gain from any potential deduction of points imposed on Vettel.

The Italian will now come face-to-face with Ecclestone in Istanbul, where the Annual General Assembly of the FIA takes place this week.
