Fantasyland: When the going gets tough... use your Wildcard

David Silva and John Terry are among the players you should think twice about having in your fantasy team this week.

IT HAD TO happen sometime. And following two disastrous gameweeks, the time felt right to use my Wildcard.

So now I await the numerous injuries that will inevitably inflict my newly assembled team.

Oh well, there’s always the January transfer/Wildcard window to look forward to.

Two players to pick this week

Rafael Van der Vaart (Tottenham): Though at times seeming to have a touch of the Berbatov/Ronaldo-type laziness, you fortunately don’t lose points in Fantasy Football for not tracking back. Consequently, the Dutchman is well worth having in your team. He is especially valuable, given that he is classed as a midfielder, when he essentially plays as a second striker for Spurs, meaning he gets more points, while scoring more goals than the majority of strikers out there.

Leon Best (Newcastle): I know I’ve singled him out before, but Leon Best really is proving to be a revelation for Newcastle this season. He has scored several goals and made numerous assists on a regular basis, and at 5.2million, he is cheaper than most decent midfielders in the league. Moreover, it’s largely thanks to his superb value for money that I can accommodate both Rooney and Van Persie in my side. I wonder if Giovanni Trapattoni will sufficiently reward him for being the most in-form Irish striker in the league.

Two players to avoid this week

David Silva (Man City): Yes, I have written of Silva’s excellence this season already and no, I haven’t changed my mind already. However, Silva has picked up an injury and is rated as having only a 75% chance of playing. But even if he does recover, he has featured in all ten of City’s games so far, so don’t be surprised if Mancini rests him. Alternatively, if he does play, City face a tricky fixture away to QPR. We all know how difficult Chelsea found that trip.

John Terry (Chelsea): Let’s forget the racism allegations for the moment and focus on the context of the game at hand. Chelsea are in poor form and travel to Blackburn – where Arsenal, among others, have struggled. Terry looked less than assured against Arsene Wenger’s men and even cost his side a goal, indicating that he is affected by the external pressure he is currently under. So for the moment, having Terry in your team is a risk not worth taking.

Predictions for the week:

Newcastle 2-1 Everton

Arsenal 3-1 West Brom

Aston Villa 1-1 Norwich

Blackburn 2-3 Chelsea

Liverpool 2-0 Swansea

Man United 3-0 Sunderland

QPR 1-3 Man City

Wolves 2-1 Wigan

Bolton 2-2 Stoke

Fulham 1-2 Tottenham

How my team got on last gameweek: Terribly. Now let us never speak of it again.
