Update: FAI give Trapattoni vote of confidence

The Ireland manager has come under pressure since the team’s 6-1 loss to Germany at the weekend.

THE FAI HAVE said the future of Giovanni Trapattoni as Ireland manager is safe for now, it has been confirmed.

Following a meeting of the association’s board of management this evening, a statement released this evening from the FAI read as follows:

“The Board of the FAI met today and discussed Ireland’s performances in the World Cup Qualifying campaign to date and the prospects of achieving qualification for Brazil 2014.

“The Board agreed that convening a meeting between the Germany and Faroe Islands matches and/or commenting on the Germany game or the manager’s position prior to last night’s game would have been totally inappropriate.

“Following today’s discussions the Board, while disappointed like everyone with the poor result and performance against Germany and understanding the frustration of some of our supporters, believes the current position in the group means that qualification for Brazil in 2014 remains a realistic and achievable prospect and reaffirmed that Giovanni Trapattoni is to remain in charge of the national team.

“The Board recognises the depth of feeling surrounding the team, the performances, the results and the manager, reflecting the passion which everyone in Irish football has for the game and will continue to work closely with the manager.”

The news of  meeting had initially led to intense speculation that the association’s board of management would agree to sack Trapattoni as Ireland manager.

The Irish team has been heavily criticised of late, following their embarrassing 6-1 loss to Germany, in addition to a disappointing Euro 2012 campaign.

Though some critics correctly believed Trapattoni had done enough to extend his stay as manager, as the team recorded a comprehensive win over the Faroe Islands last night.

Senior figures in the Irish set-up, including Robbie Keane, have also backed Trap to stay on in the position, despite many fans and journalists calling for a change.
