FAI announces details of inaugural President's Cup

The Premier Division winners face the FAI Cup holders at Richmond Park in March.

AIRTRICITY LEAGUE PREMIER Division champions St Patrick’s Athletic will meet FAI Cup winners Sligo Rovers in the very first President’s Cup on 2 March.

Richmond Park will host the inaugural match a week before the new league campaign gets underway with the Saints hosting the team they defeated to clinch their first title in 11 years last October.

“President Higgins support for the Airtricity League and Irish soccer is deeply appreciated and the introduction of the President’s Cup will provide us with an exciting game between the league champions and cup winners to start each new season,” said chairman of the National League Executive Committee Eamon Naughton.”

Director of the Airtricity League Fran Gavin added: “President Higgins is a huge supporter of our game and takes the time out from his busy schedule to go to games and meet players, officials and supporters.

“He is really behind this idea and the game will also have a charitable aspect to it.”

I will Never forget being at the brilliant fai cup final this year between Sligo and Drogheda, one of the best matches I’ve ever seen, not just the drama the quality of play was superb.

I spent the first half with the Drogheda supporters and the second half with the Sligo fans. I’ve been all over World cups, fa cup finals, uefa cup finals, very few games get close to that one.

I recall St Pats winning the Presidents Cup in ’96. Doesn’t really make this inaugural now does it?

Remember sitting in a car while Raff Cretaro and his mate crossed the street in front of me. A really hot girl walked past the car and I’m thinking “bet ya he’s gonna turn around and stare at her arse for a solid ten seconds”.
And sure enough he gawks at her ass for a solid ten seconds.

    What a ledge!
