Euro 2012: So who’s winning the battle of the TV stations?

We analyse the analysts… how have top, top pundits like Dunphy, Hansen and Keane fared so far this tournament?

IF IT AIN’T broke, don’t fix it, has been RTÉ’s approach to this year’s European Championship.

John Giles, Liam Brady and Eamon Dunphy are like the proverbial, well-oiled machine and with Bill O’Herlihy playing the role of stage master, the analysis has been entertaining if unoriginal.

Bill, not to be left behind by technology has embraced social media for this tournament, in fact you can follow the ramblings of the wily old Corkman here.

Brady, Dunphy and Giles haven’t been taken in by this Twitter rubbish: ‘Will Ireland beat Croatia?’ asked Bill,  in the first of many Irish polls that, like Trapattoni got it completely wrong on the day.  Some 86% of us — blinded perhaps by the euphoria engulfing the country —  said yes. The panel burst out laughing.

But, like Croatia, at least you can rely on the lads to give us a reality check when we need it most.

Star Pundit - Liam Brady: Although the Arsenal man got it wrong on Croatia (he had tipped them to win it), overall he’s given the most informed opinion in the studio. His time spent working with Ireland and Trapattoni during the World Cup 2010 qualifying campaign leaves him in a better position than most to comment on the motives behind Trapattoni’s decisions.

BBC

If there’s one thing we can thank BBC and ITV for, it’s the introduction of the celebrity pundit. Without them we’d never have been introduced to Dietmar Hamann and his strange eyebrows, nor would Ossie ‘Tott-ing-ham’ Ardiles have graced us with his presence.

Still, who could forget Gazza on ITV in 2002, or that same tournament when Ian Wright turned up on BBC dressed as the Karate Kid? But for every risk there’s reward and for BBC this summer it has come in the form of Clarence Seedorf.

After his classy, informed stint back in 2010, the Dutchman has been  recalled to Salford. Yes, that wasn’t a typo, Gary Lineker and co. have been forced to swap the sun, golf and light shirts these tournaments usually afford them, for gloomy Manchester. For the first time since 2002 BBC haven’t relocated their entire studio to the host nation.

On Twitter, Lineker put up some lame excuse about BBC being unable to find a suitable location for their headquarters. Something tells me a lack of money and the looming 2012 Olympics had something to do with it.

ITV have no such worries…

Star Pundit - Clarence Seedorf: The Dutchman has been a breath of fresh air. The likes of Alan Shearer and Robbie Savage add little to proceedings besides grinning like maniacs so the insightful comments by the midfielder have been very well received. Sign him up for Match of the Day, please.

ITV

Yes, ITV — or UTV for you and me — are out in Poland and boy do they like to let you know. Besides mentioning it every five minutes, we’ve had match analysis in a Polish restaurant complete with puzzled diners. All that was missing was James Richardson of Football Italia fame, in the background scoffing some expensive looking dessert.

The big attraction on UTV, for us at least, has been Roy Keane and the Corkman hasn’t disappointed.

Fighting with pretty much everyone on the Irish team at this stage, who knows where the knock-out stages will lead him. Gareth Southgate has been, well Gareth Southgate but Patrick Vieira has been a big disappointment.  Not quite Jamie Redknapp-bland but not far off. Can Adrian Chiles not do something to get Keane and Vieira fighting? Give the people what they want.

Star Pundit – Roy Keane: I know, I know. Roy Keane above all people. But, come on I can’t pick Gareth Southgate . Keane is ok, he’s drummed up a lot of publicity with his criticism of the Irish setup but has offered little else in the other games. The best of a bad lot.

  • Can’t watch ITV at all, principally because of Adrian Chiles. He’s the kind fella that would make me leave a pub. His inane chattering is just bile. How he’s on telly is just ridiculous.

  • Kenny Cunningham deserves a mention, he’s been fantastic. Having come through the academy at Premier Soccer Saturday he’s performed well with the senior team.

  • Brady is the problem this year, anything approaching criticism and he withdraws into an obvious sulk, effect of this is that dunphy and Giles attempt to placate him and end up being less than objective and back track from criticism. Brady is paid to be objective, if he can’t listen to criticism of his friends he should not be there because Subsequent tip toeing around him means its obvious to all that others in studio feel partially gagged and commentary and analysis is less insightful and less entertaining

  • No mention of Richard Sadlier, harsh enough I think. His argument with Brady after the France Ukraine game was postponed was brilliant.

Also F365 allude to how good Lee Dixon is on BBC. Would have to agree. Excellent observations on defending and tactics even if he as a person is pretty bland.

  • I think Giles and Dunphy have been to soft on Trapattoni, I think they don’t want to upset Brady!

Best analysis is still James Richardson. His Guardian Podcast is the best thing out there and got me through some trips over in Poiland

  • Bring back Souness rte great man

  • RTE are still the best but years of Après Match has made it harder to take them seriously.

  • rte narrows it for me but the commentary is brutal, gaa heads calling throw ins, throw balls ect, I’d stitch to ITV for the actual game only our television providers here seem to have their coverage 8 seconds behind, are they trying to force us to watch rte?

  • Seamus, I’m not an England fan, but its a results game not a performance game at the group stage.
Topping a group deserves credit, in doing so England have avoided Spain in the next round.
RTE can’t seem to acknowledge this.
I agree Richie Sadlier and Kenny Cunningham aren’t bad – they’re so much better than the old fossils of Brady, Giles and Dunphy. Seriously, when will that lot call it a day?
The best that RTE have by a mile is Darragh Maloney. He’s brilliant. – he has a vast knowledge of football from his Champions League magazine days.
I’d like a revamp of the panel as well as the team.
Darragh Maloney with Sadlier, Cunningham and bring back Souness!

  • Can’t say I’ve been too impressed with Brady at all – first game – ‘I don’t know much about the Greeks’ – I thought that was your job? (And I thought that was John Giles’ line!). And he’s clearly on the books for the FAI cause Trap’s ‘tactics’ have been a disgrace and the one negative thing about the tournament, but Brady sticks by him and doesn’t entertain any criticism which is ridiculous.

Sadlier the best by a long way.

P.S. Nicholas Behan – England have been Shite for the majority of each of their games and are very lucky to have gone through at all.

  • RTÉ would be a whole lot more watchable if they told Dumphy to do one, ITV is so benign and irritating its untrue and the BBC have decent commentators but there’s more life in a corpse than Lineker and Hansen combined

  • eamon liam n giles the best

  • RTE are the most unprofessional collection of over-the-hill senile and utterly incompetent begrudgers.
Its a farce. They cannot call a spade a spade when it comes to the awful irish team, yet they can’t criticise a far superior English side (who topped their group) quickly enough.
To be fair, Bill o Herlihy is god as he shows proper evidence of research done. Brady is just about ok but has so miserable in general. He never looks or acts lie he even likes football.
Eamonn Dunphy means well but cannot avoid the sweeping and ridiculous statement.
John Giles is just plain appalling. He NEVER knows the names of foreign players or the clubs they pay for. He is a master of stating the obvious, and he has been proven wrong on many occasion.

BBC are very bland too but a lot more cheerful and appear professional in their analysis, as they don’t go off on a tangent of personal dislike for people or players. Clarence Seedorf is the most boring analyst i’ve ever heard. He’s made of plastic.

For Me, ITV have been the best. Roy Keane gets straight to the point. Adrian Chiles has god banter with the team of Carragher and Martinez. I like the way BBC and ITV both stick with analysing the actual games and not having a moan for 10 minutes – and do so in a very inarticulate (drunk) manner as rte.

ITV is best for me for Keane’s honesty that is backed up by video analysis.

    • Adrian Chiles is a condescending tosser, you can see the loathing in Keanes eyes and the only reason there is to watch their pathetic attempt at coverage is the way Keane cuts across him and makes him look like the clueless fool he is

    • It’s too late to apologise for typos, fail to prepare prepare to fail. You are clearly only here for mild amusement and taking not it seriously enough, it’s enough to keano kick Triggs up the arse. You need to go away and take a long hard look at yourself.
