Open Thread: Who would you cast in the remake of Escape to Victory

The classic football movie is set for a reboot.

SAD NEWS REACHED TheScore.ie towers yesterday that one of our all-time favourite films was to be remade with – admittedly quite talented – director Doug Liman coming on board.

Escape to Victory the 1981 classic about a team of WWII Allied prisoners who play a football match against a German team in Nazi-occupied Paris – all the time planning their escape – famously featured the likes of Pele and Ossie Ardiles alongside actors such as Michael Caine and Sylvester Stallone.

The movie also featured players like Bobby Moore, John Wark and Werner Roth who played the role of the German captain Baumann. There was even a role for Ireland and UEFA Cup winning Ipswich Town midfielder Kevin O’Callaghan.

It is, in short, the great football movie. However, if a remake is to be produced, we’d like you, the commenters, to have a say in who gets cast in the lead roles.

Here are a few suggestions from the office:

“I believe Sly Stallone should reprise his role as Hatch. He is a big Everton fan and has surely been taking goalkeeping tips from Tim Howard. Also, he looks younger now that he did back in 1981 and could still rock that woolly goalies’ jersey/jumper.”
“Chris O’Dowd as the Irish fella. He played in goal for the Rossies minors so can play at bit as well as act.”
“I’m going to make the argue for Fred – or Frej – to take up the Pele mantle. Sure, he might not have the talent of his fellow Brazilian but that moustache could win an oscar on its own.”

But that’s enough about what we think, how about you? Let us know who you think should get a role in the remake in the comments below.
