This Ernie Els three-putt wouldn't look out of place on a crazy golf course

Els tried to play it cool in the Liverpool sun — and ended up looking very silly indeed.

THEY SAY YOU can’t win the Open Championship on the first hole but you can certainly lose it. Just ask Ernie Els about his nightmare start at Royal Liverpool today.

“The Big Easy” made this two-foot bogey putt look anything but, scooting it a good distance past the hole.

Then, in a moment that can only be put down to frustration and a lack of concentration, Els tried to nonchalantly backhand his ball into the cup… and missed again, leaving him with a triple-bogey seven to start the day.

The groans from the greenside gallery, and from the BBC commentary box, say it all.

Els bogeyed the next hole. And the fourth. And the sixth. He’s now five-over par and 11 shots off Rory McIlroy’s clubhouse lead.
