Divided Loyalties

The two brothers who were opponents in yesterday's Mayo county final

Eoghan and Tommy O’Reilly lined out against each other in Elverys MacHale Park.

THE MEETING OF neighbouring clubs Castlebar Mitchels and Breaffy in yesterday’s Mayo county senior football final created plenty interest.

And it was hard to beat the rivalry experienced by the O’Reilly brothers, Eoghan and Tommy.

23 year-old Eoghan was full-back on the triumphant Castlebar Mitchels side while his younger brother Tommy (20) was centre-forward on the defeated Breaffy team. Castlebar Mitchels were crowned champions for the first time in 20 years with a 1-11 to 0-8 win.

Both players lined out in the colors of Castlebar Mitchels when they were younger before Tommy stopped playing Gaelic football for a time in his teenage years.

When he opted to return to Gaelic football, he joined the Breaffy ranks as he had friends on the side. Both Castlebar Mitchels and Breaffy are based in the one parish so there is no difficulty in players moving clubs and there were no complications with the transfer.

Eoghan was left celebrating last night as he and his Castlebar Mitchels teammates now go forward to take on Galway’s Corofin in the Connacht championship. For Tommy and his Breaffy teammates, the wait for a first Mayo county senior football crown goes on.
